Radiator fans not coming on. replaced thermostat and cooling sensor


Hi Bill, is the engine actually getting hot enough for the fans to come on? if the engine does have overheating problem (but you say the temp gauge reads normal) then i would check the operation of the engine temp switch, there are two, one for the gauge and one for the fans.

Unplug the fan on sensor. It should have one green wire and one black wire. Use a paper clip and jump the two wires. Turn the key to the run position, the engine does not need to be running. Does the fan come on? If not check the green wire for 12 volts and the black wire for ground. If there is no ground than run a new ground wire. If the is no power check the heater/air conditioning fuse in the under dash fuse block. If there is power and ground make sure both the cooling fan fuses are good and both the cooling fan relays are good.

If the relay is getting too hot, the most common problem is a faulty radiator fan. The fan motor pulls current thru the relay. The radiator fan motor may be failing after it runs for a period of time.

Ask to see a water pump for your car at an autoparts store like Autozone or Advance. This may be a model with a relief valve inside the waterpump. If your car is one of the rare ones with this part, it may be stuck open on your car.

Also have someone check the Electric Radiator cooling fan Relay. Sometimes it can stick to run full on when it should be off. This would be a simple fix. There are also sensors which activate the Electric Radiator cooling fan Relay. If the sensor is telling the engine to cool itself too early, then the fan would activate too soon.

You can get FREE diagrams at Autozone.com and see which Relay is in the powerbox and which is by the electric Radiator fan. Then you could simply replace the relay. But the sensor, if bad, would still tell the Relay the wrong information. It would need to be replaced, perhaps instead of the Relay.

If the car seems to be have some drivibility issues in cold weather, then the temperature sensor may be failing to tell the engine that it is cold and not hot. The sensor can be stuck on the hot settings, making the electric Radiator fan work and failing to control the engine for cold conditions.

Over heating electric fan not coming on.i check the fan and it works how do you check the relay?


If your electric fan(s) is not coming on when the engine is hot, first check the fuse, usually in the fusebox under the hood. Then, with the engine hot and running, pull out the fan relay (usually in the same box as the fuse). If it's working, it should click when removed and again when replaced in its socket. If it doesn't, suspect the relay or sensor has failed. See my note here on how to troubleshoot the relay socket: http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check. If your gage runs off the same sensor and works, it's probably fine. If you're good with electronics, you can also test the sensor. If these are all good, either the wire to the fan is bad or the fan itself is bad. You can test the wire for voltage with a test light hooked to the fan connector.

This code pertains to the cooling fan relay. Change the relay if necessary. When the engine heats up the sensor will send the signal to the relay to start the fan. If the engine is hot & the fan has not started, change it.Good luck!

Cooling fans not running


HI. I have a very thorough, step by step procedure that will help troubleshoot this issue. follow carefully, to isolate the problem, Use extreme caution when preforming this inspection procedure.



1.Check for broken wires or loose connectors around the fan circuit. Inspect connectors at the fan motor, relay, sensor or heat sensitive switch, and the Electronic Control Module (ECM)--your car’s computer control system. Also, make sure to check for a possible blown fan fuse. These are common and overlooked troublesome spots that may cause a fan to fail.


2.Run and bring the engine to warm temperature. With the engine running, use a voltage test light to check for power to the motor fan. Be extra careful and make sure to keep your hands and tools away from the belt, fan or any other engine moving parts. If voltage is reaching the fan motor, the test light should glow.


3.Turn off the engine after you see the light glow. Apply direct voltage to the fan motor from your car battery using a pair of spare wires. If the fan fails to operate, replace the fan motor. If the motor operates, your problem is in the motor connector.


4.Locate the heat-sensitive switch or heating sensor if the fan motor operates with direct voltage and the test light did not glow. You should find the sensor in the radiator, engine block, or thermostat housing.


5.Measure the resistance across the heating sensor with the multimeter. With the engine at cool temperature (engine off), it should register infinite resistance; with the engine at warm temperature (engine off), you should read low resistance. If both readings state infinite resistance install a new heating sensor, that’s the cause of your failing fan.


6.Check the action of the fan relay if the heating sensor is registering variable resistance. Your service manual should specify the power and ground wires according to color codes and the proper way to test it. If the fan relay fails the test replace it with a new one.


7.Check the connections going to the ECM after you determine the fan relay is working properly. If you find broken wires or loose connectors, make the necessary repairs. If you suspect a defective ECM take your vehicle to a service shop for a computer analysis. In most cases, the ECM is rare to be the cause of a failing fan. The above steps should take you to the root cause of your problem and help you fix the cooler fan.

Grand Am 4 cyl. Car - Fan does not turn on


there is no computer to turn the fan on. it works on a thermal switch. so you have a relay to the fan. when the temp sensor gets hot it connects the circuit to the relay and then the fan is on. vary simple. and it works when the car is still hot but the key has been turned off till the switch cools off or some have a timer so it does not run for ever. so good guess is the temp sensor for the fan could be bad if the fan is working.
