Question about 2002 Saturn L-Series
I have had a similar incident with my Saturn LS, DTC1632. The key was sloppy in ignition, which I ultimately think created the Security light from coming on and preventing me from starting the car on occasion. After waiting 15 minutes the car would usually start. Sometimes the security light would flash, but after several successful starts, the flashing light would reset. OK, The root of the issue most likely is with the ignition key cylinder. I fixed my security issue by replacing the key cylinder. Usually major auto parts stores have them for around $50.00. If you look here or on the most popular video sights you can find instruction on how to preplace. It is rather simple, but takes a little time to remove and install the key switch. Plan on at least 4 hours to do this. It is a rather inexpensive solution to do it yourself rather then taking it to a dealer or shop to have done. You will need a 7mm 1/4" drive socket and a T15 screwdriver to remove the cowl cover under the steering wheel, also a small flat tip screwdriver to remove the plastic key cover. You also will need a large paper clip to insert in the key cylinder hole to release the key cylinder from the housing. Key must be in the run position, you may have to turn the key back and forth slightly to depress the spring loaded retainer which holds the key in the housing. ALSO - Disconnect the Battery FIRST OF ALL. Don't want any air bags going off. Reverse process to reinstall key cylinder, although you do not have to depress the spring loaded retaining feature, just push the key cylinder in place. Again it will have to be in the run position when installing. Best of luck.

Testimonial: "I don't think it is the ignition switch though I could be wrong. The problems started after my son put a new stereo in the car--we have since put the old one back in. All kinds of codes were going off and everything would stop working. I could get it to start but not switch into drive. A bunch of lights would come on and the gauges would cease working. A strange thing happened though. When I hook up the scanner and clear the codes--if I leave the scanner hooked up, the car will start up and run perfectly. It switches into drive, no lights come on and all the gauges work. I dove it a good 20 min. like that to get it home. As soon as I take the scanner off, everything stops working again and it throws the 2 codes. Any ideas? Apr 15, 2014"
