What is the code 171 mean on my dodge ram 1500

P0171 Chrysler - Fuel System Lean

Possible causes
- Intake air leaks
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection

Tech notes
If the P0171 is combined with the P0174 code, it's very likely that the problem is caused by an intake leak. If there are no intake leaks, the next step is to replaced the air filter and clean the air flow meter. If the problem persist the front oxygen (O2) sensor may need to be replaced.

When is the code detected?
- Fuel injection system does not operate properly.
- The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too small. (The mixture ratio is too lean.)

Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Excessive Fuel Consumption

P0171 Chrysler Description
With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (2 trip detection logic).

My 95 Tahoe has no power and it backfires on all down grades also is getting terrible gas mileage.got any ideas??

backfiring is due to explosive fuel mixture entering the exhaust system. It can be an extreme lean mixture igniting from a hot exhaust ( leaking manifold -vacuum hoses--EGR unit) or excessive fuel from dribbling injectors.---low fuel pressure producing lean mixture. Run the fault codes to see if there any reported faults.

Reduced power shut down when outside air temp dips below 60.Usually only after start up

The code is for the fuel mixture too lean which you may already know.
The O2 sensor is telling the computer the fuel mixture is too lean and the computer can not make the mixture rich by leaving the injectors on longer.
Have you actually checked the fuel pressure at the injectors ?
Any vac leaks ?

I have 1993 pontiac bonnevile, it will not pass emissions the nox levels are to high this is the fourth try. what can i do. also my check engine light comes on as well.

high NOX indicates your engine is running high combustion temps. Two of the major reasons for lean mixtures are intake leaks and clogged fuel injectors. The reason the engine computer cycles between rich/lean when running is because the cat needs lean mixtures to deal with HC and CO and a rich mixture to deal with NOX. If you are running lean the cat can't lower your NOX. I would first get your fuel injectors flushed and de-carbonize your intake/combustion chambers.

I have a code reader and the code is P0171 P0174 System too lean. what makes the system too lean?

P0171 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 1
Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

P0174 - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 2
Possible Causes:
- Intake air leaks
- Front Heated oxygen sensor may be faulty
- Injectors may be faulty
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Mass air flow sensor may be faulty
- Incorrect PCV hose connection

What Causes These Codes: Fuel injection system does not operate properly. The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too large. (The mixture ratio is too rich.) The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the engine Air/Fuel mixture ratio, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The PCM calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios. In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the PCM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the engine light. The codes is usually set when there is an intake leak after the air flow meter, before replacing any parts check for loose or broken hoses and intake gasket leak. On Ford some models dirty air filter, and dirty or faulty air flow sensor are the cause of the problem.

2002 Kia Sedona 3.5L V6. Computer reads lean fuel mixture. Already replaced fuel filter and pump. This mixture problem has existed for over 3 years and has baffled more than 6 ASE mechanics. What are...

Fuel Filter and Pump-won't cause a lean condition, unless you don't have sufficient volume.
Air leaking in around injector O-Rings
Any kind of air leak,including intake manifold,loose O2 Sensors,Etc,Etc

6 ASE people should be able to figure it out!!!

Look at all Data on an Oscilloscope.
The fact that the computer reads lean--IS IT a lean condition.
Check tailpipe emissions to confirm,lean

Hyundai Elantra 2000, engine light code 1128

Code 1128 on a Hyundai is a lean mixture fault
http://www.freeautomechanic.com/diagnostictroblecodes11.html

"lean" means the engine is not getting enough fuel. Or the sensor is indicating a lean mixture.
Causes include...
oxygen sensor or wiring bad- located in the exhaust pipe
plugged fuel filter- located in the fuel line, specific location varies by car
MAF sensor or wiring bad (Mass Air Flow).- located in the air intake
low fuel pressure due to failing fuel pump or failing pressure regulator.
leaks in the intake manifold
leaking or disconnected vacuum lines

2006 Toyota Corolla Code P0171 What could be the problem?

po171 means the air fuel ratio is lean (not enough fuel) so you must check for anything that can do that a good example would be a vacuum leak that allows non metered air to enter the engine (more air same amount of fuel = lean mixture) or a clogged injector (same amount of air less fuel = lean mixture as well)

How do i adjust the rich/lean fuel mixture cracked intake

You can't do it with out a tech 2 scanner, so your going to have to go back to the Mechanic to have it reprogrammed. As long as it's running rich, your going to have bad fuel economy and will not pass the emission test when you have to have it done. Good luck and glad to know you got your car running almost 100%
