Sound like a coolant (antifreeze) leak. This leak could be anywhere, including the heater core which could be expensive to fix. Check the coolant level when the engine is cold to see if it is low. Don't drive with missing coolant as you may destroy your engine.

Color of Antifreeze/Coolant for 2002 Camry

If there was red antifreeze in there before, adding green product can cause sludging in the water jacket of the engine. They are not compatible. The right type for this engine is the red or orange type.

Have the system drained and flushed a few times, and refill with red type coolant mix.

This may be a simple thing, don't get to nervous just yet. A similar problem came up the other day on fixya.com in reference to another car. Because of the way cars are designed now a days it just may be possible that you have an air bubble or pocket. Usually this happens in engines that sit a little lower than the heater unit. The way you describe your problem with an oil change first, then car running hot, may be purely coincidental. Try these checks first.
1- check for leaks around the engine, any hoses you may have removed when replacing the parts you replaced, thermostat goose neck, and if after filling your radiator has the level mysteriously gone down.
2- is it possible to see and check your water pump, if you can grab the pulley and yank on it hard. Does it have play, if so it could be bad and leaking through the weap hole.
3-you may have a bad head gasket (BLOWN). This could be putting oil into your antifreeze or antifreeze into your engine. If it's in your oil you would have seen this when you did the oil change CHOCALOT MILKSHAKE and more than five quarts. If it's going into your engine then it's coming out your exhaust. When you start the engine, if the exhaust smells SWEET your head gasket is bad.
4- you say coolant temperature light on and coolant level OK. If as I said in the beginning AIR BUBBLE . Remove your radiator cap , run engine to operating temperature, put on your heater, fill your radiator till it maintains proper level. I hope it's this simple for you. GOOD LUCK.

Antifreeze light says system is low and car runs hot but antifreeze level is where it should be

Sounds like it could be a thermostat not opening. If the thermostat doesn't open then it will get hot because its not allowing the cooled antifreeze from the radiator into the engine. Your car has two circulations with the antifreeze. While your car is running it is heating up the antifreeze in the engine and when it reaches a certain temperature the thermostat opens and takes the hot antifreeze from the engine and puts it into the radiator to be cooled. At the same time the cool antifreeze from the radiator is placed into the engine to keep it cool. If your thermostat doesn't open your engine will get hot and overheat.

Make sure that the engine has enough antifreeze and has been bled of all air in the system by topping off the fluid over a period of a few days of running it hot and cooling down.

If the engine is not boiling over, and you don't notice any performance problems, perhaps the false signal of overheating is being sent to the dash board.

In that case, don't worry too much about it.

You can try to measure the actual temperature of the coolant/antifreeze by using a cooking thermometer dipped into the radiator's coolant/antifreeze with the cap off (if it is of the appropriate design that allows this) starting to measure the temperature from a cold start and waiting for the coolant to circulate.

Good luck on this repair.

Check the upper radiator hose for a split/crack in it. If not obvious, refill the cooling system and run the engine to locate the leak. We need to know this to advise you. If that hose is split, replace hose and refill system. Be sure to open any bleeder ports in the cooling system to purge all air. Let us know if you have more questions ot need directions.

How do you put water in the radiator

  1. Step1.Shut the motor off and leave the vehicle parked for at least an hour. The engine must be completely cool before it's safe to touch.
  2. Step2Mix water with coolant before adding it to the radiator. Use half water and half antifreeze. Coolant freezes at a lower temperature and boils at a higher temperature than plain water, so it continues to circulate and cool the engine at temperatures that would freeze or overheat water. Antifreeze also has additives that deter corrosion in the radiator and engine.
  3. Step3Pour 50/50 antifreeze and water into the coolant recovery reservoir. The container is marked to show full coolant levels for hot or cold engines. Fill the tank to the mark for a cold engine to ensure enough fluid for the radiator and the rest of the cooling system.

Temperature gauge is inaccurate and check engine light comes on but its not over heating and everything else is fine can it be a sensor ? The temperatue gauage didn't read anything for months but now...

Have you checked the antifreeze level lately? Low antifreeze will cause a temp sensor to give false readings. Does your heater work OK, as in does it blow hot air when heater is on? that is another symptom of low antifreeze.

As far as the check engine light coming off and on, I would bet it is the oxygen sensor that might need to be replaced.
