Diagnose function of the guage before condemning it, check fuel level sender in the tank for worn contacts, easily accessed under the rear seat. guage will move slowly (thats normal) unplugging the connector should make the guage go all the way one direction, while shorting the sender wires will make it go the opposite direction. p.s. dont short pump wires

I have found owner's manuals in the salvage yard in the glove box of wrecked vehicles. You can also go to the Honda Owner's Link page. https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/login.asp?logout=1

Make sure the engine is getting fuel and spark. You can check for fuel by unscrewing the bolt on the fuel rail and trying to start it. You should have fuel spray out. To check for spark, unscrew a spark plug and plug it into the corresponding ignition wire. While resting the threads of the plug on the valve cover, try starting the engine (or have someone else try to start it for you) and watch for spark to come from the tip of the plug.

I just purchased in 1999 Honda CRV DX, it had been sitting for a couple of years put fresh gas in plugs and changed oil, and it is running a little rough still. I'm thinking of doing new wires .'

I recommend changing the fuel filter, air filter, and adding Seafoam Fuel System Cleaner into the gas tank to clean the injectors as well as replacing the wires.

'99 CR-V troubleshooting fuel system

Could be a fuel regulator also. I would start by checking the fuel pressure with a specialized gauge. The range varies for every auto depending on where you hook up guage you will have some pressure loss, but it should be only a few pounds. I would check for power at the pump also, should be battery voltage. The relay is easy to check, just swap out the relay with one door another one that matches, like for the fan or Windows etc. Look for an embossed number on the relay, to make sure. Make sure to put it back. And replace if that fixes the issue. There's may be a code that could set the dash light on. It may also have residual codes that don't set off the light. An injector issue should ping a specific cylinder with a code. The fuel pump would cause all cylinders to set off codes.

I had the same problem. My battery was going bad. When I replaced it with a new one, the fuel gauge worked fine.
