Why does my 1998 mercury sable rattle when accelerating

Could be the exhaust heat shield has come lose from rusting over the years. Without more diagnosis it is hard to tell what the noise is. What i have suggested is just a common rattle from under the car. Need more to diagnise effectively

Just bought a Sportster 883 2002. There's a rattle in the engine as I get higher up in rpms. Also the exhaust pops as I accelerate. Any idea as to what could be the deal. Carb maybe?

Ahhhh..the Sporty has a rattle...or is it a ping? If your popping through the exhaust, the timing could be off and running rich (Check Spark Plug for dark sooty layer) If your engine is pinging could be advanced timing... pre-ignition happens on acceleration or under a load...loose valves will make noise all the time

Do you have the CV Keihin still? Or are you running an aftermarket carburetor ? Like an S&S?

I have a 425 CI 7 litre Cadillac V8 in a 1979 Diamanté. Once the engine is up to temperature a rattle like noise comes into the engine under acceleration. The noise goes when the throttle is

You need to find where the noise is coming from. On the top could be lifters, valves or low octane gas causing a ping. On the bottom could only one thing. Rod knock. The bearings for the pistons and crankshaft are worn.

2002 2w 4 cy stick shift. My car is running but there is a rattling or drowneding sound. Not sure if it's timing, water pump or center bearing. How do I know

Timing will not make a noise unless you are under acceleration or load ---Water pump will make a dead rattling sound ( listen to the end of a screw driver on the water pump housing . It will have a deep rumble if faulty)--centre bearing will be noisy when travelling and will produce a vibration at speed . More information as to when the noise is happening and wether the car is stationary or travelling would be a big help.

My 1997 Pontiac Sunfire convertible is making a rattling noise when I accelerate. What could it be and how do I fix it?

Any noise must be first inferred for the point of generation. So in this case I think as you mentioned it must be from the engine and the options are to check if the rattling is there while on the move or if the enigne is revd.
If while on the move , check the wheel bearings, the suspension parts, mudguards, muffler/exhaust and steering sections.
If while the engine is revd, it can be the water pump/alternator, radiator fan, idler pulley or the main pulley belt.
Observe, ask a friend to drive while you locate the source of noise to confirm the section.
