SOURCE: 2001 subaru outback overheats

It could be the water pump, radiator, or cooling fan not working properly. If your heat is off it will not be the heater core.

without more detail it's hard to tell, but it sounds like you may have a bad head gasket.

this could be your head gasket ,,your car might be mixing oil with water,,open oil cap and check back of oil cap if there is white grey sludge, your head gaskets on its way out, your car will lose power,it will overheat alot then it will stop, very dear to fix

My bmw 316i coupe 1998 is overheating

Good point above. Does the fan come on?

If you have no heat, you have air in the heater core.

You say the head gasket is ok because yoou have no oil in the water. Many times the head gaqsket blows combustion into the cooling system only. Get the car up to temp with the radiator cap off, put it in gear, hold the brake and load the engine. If you have a lot of bubblls out of the radiator, you have a blow heade gasket or cracked head.

Check the ignitin timing. Old BMW's would overheat in a heart beat with retarded Ignition timing.

My bet is head gasket because the heater core is air bound

good luck

verify the engine cooling fan runs at idle without the AC on, it should come on around just past 1/2 scale on the temp guage, do not let it overheat! these engines have aluminum cylinder heads and u can blow the head gasket out, let me know the results
