Question about 1987 Toyota Cressida

1 Answer

My 87 Cressida won't start.....

Maybe you could let me know i messed up. i decided to degrease the engine compartment with very little degreaser and water, though i made sure i kept water and degreaser from the distributor cap plugs wires ect. when i tried to start it... its clicks like if the starter went out. any pointers you could give me to check on what i my have done. and i'm never going to do this again.
P.S. Thank you for the last tips you gave me.

Thank you for the info.. i was thinking the same thing being it sounds like the starter. it just clicks engine won't even turn, but i tried to locate the starter and i couldn't find it. isn't it usually near the transmission ? i looked but couldn't find it maybe to do the ole hammer the starter test. i was thinking maybe i'll have to jack the car up to get to the starter ?

Check battery will supply power to headlights etc. - if not:-

Check your battery terminal connections - these may be dirty/corroded - in cleaning you may have disturbed the terminal posts and caused a high resistance joint.
Check battery to chassis ground connection.

Is it possible you have got water in the engine (via the air inlet)? It doesnt take much water to lock the engine- if you think that is so remove the sparkplugs and try cranking the motor with them out.

(If it cranks with the plugs out this will eject any water.)

Otherwise perhaps the problem is with the starter motor itself - like water in the solenoid switch.

Try one or both of these tests on the starter motor:-

    1) Identify the starter switch control terminal on the starter motor (usually a 6.4mm male spade lug) - briefly connect +12V to that terminal - it should cause starter motor to engage while ever +12V is applied.

Only do 2) below if you can do it with safety!

    2) Use a large bladed type screwdriver to very briefly short the large battery power terminals on the starter solenoid together - this will complete the power circuit to the starter motor - if it doesnt run then, the starter motor is faulty.

NOTE.. Take care not to short the screwdriver or power terminals to ground when conducting this test!

You should expect a arc/spark from the tip of the screwdriver- when you short the terminals, as the tip of the screwdriver is carrying the 200 odd amps of starter current - be positive with screwdriver blade application.

Rear brake caliper won't slide across to allow movement to put in new pads. One side no worries other no way? Any ideas. Lexus es 300 2005!

From experience brakes can get hot if they are old and worn out. Maybe there was a blockage when the brake fluid was released. I had to replace all brake lines once on a vehicle because the fluid had gone past its used by and was contaminated with the moisture from the air.
Maybe degreasing and then a product like RP7 or WD40 could help. Some vehicles its possible to take the brakes off and soak them in a degreaser and recondition them.

if you hit a rock, maybe your oil pan.
inspect the car from below.
if you cannot find it, use a degreaser and clean the engine compartment, then, put some powder on the engine and start the engine. the leak should show up.
check your oil level as well, if you drop a lot, you may need more oil to start your car safely.

What is the Proper Way to DEGREASE my ENGINE @ Car Wash Degreaser

You should not have any problem if you don't concentrate on the electrical components. What i mean is stay away from them as much as possible, and don't use alot of pressure wear you can blow things off. Myself i do it at home with a can of degreaser and a garden hose, If you do it at a car wash take a can of WD40 with you incase it stalls or wont start after you do it,WD40 displaces moisture, you would be better off doing it in your own driveway if your aloud too. You can wash any part you want. watch your paint on car, some of that degreaser can take off paint.
