It sounds to me like your gearshift cable has too much free-play and needs to be tightened a little bit. There is an adjustment screw where the cable meets the shifting mechanism. You will need to remove the center console to access it.

SOURCE: Transmission woes.

What's happening is the trans. computer is detecting something wrong. It puts itself into "limp in" mode. Most of the time a sensor is acting up. Go and have you computer (trans.) scanned so you know which sensor is going bad. This is a very common occurrance with all chrysler products. Don't go to Autozone for the scan. Your best bet is to go to a transmission shop.

Sorry but if your reverse is having trouble you will probably have to replace or rebuild tranny like me. Otherwise try new filter and fluid first.

SOURCE: were in the transmission is the shift solenoid

Chrysler shifting is controled by a computer. When you turn off the car and restart it you in effect rebooting the computer thats why after you do it the car works fine.

1988 Dodge Ram 50 Automatic shifts into park reverse and neutral. But physically won't go into drive gears.

Disconnect shift cable from transmission linkage and try to manually put transmission in drive gear ( make sure wheels chocked/park brake on ). If transmission goes into drive gear, suspect a shift cable or shifter assembly problem. If you can't manually shift into drive gear by hand with cable disconnected, suspect internal transmission/shift linkage issue

My 95 Cadilac DeVille hesitates to go in to gear when I put it in drive, but if I shift to L1 it goes right into gear?

Usually a sign of a pressure problem inside the transmission.
Could be a weak pump, dirty filter, plugged valve body, or various other causes. A transmission shop should be able to check pump pressure without removing the trans.

Wont shift into third gear and also sometimes hesitates when I accelerate (as if it was being flooded).

hi, My first thought on this is that you may have a linkage issue. your shifter may read that you are in drive, but you may only be in 2nd gear. Check it out. bump it up so it will look like you are putting the car into nutral, but be careful to not go too far and put it in reverse. if that is not the issue, I would suggest that your car has a brain that knows that the transmition has a problem with 3rd gear and simply wont let it shift into 3rd because maybe there is no 3rd. like the band could be broken. post your results if ya dont mind. I am interested to hear more. I hope this helps ya. Tim

98 Dodge Avenger Shifting Problem

I would take it to a couple of different trans shops for advice.
Not really possible to "test" a transmission by driving it.
It has an over-ride safety to shift up even if the selector is in low.
My first guess would be the clutches are slipping or there is a solenoid that is not holding.
May be trouble codes in the computer.

89 mercury sable not shifting

It is definitely not your catalytic converter since that is a part on your exhaust used to burn off any fuel that wasn't ignited in the engine.

Are you able to change the gears using the 1 and 2 on the shifter?

If not your transmission is most likely toast and you should get it replaced.

If you are able to, it is a problem with your computer and you will need to have it re-programmed.

Either way you should have your mechanic service it as soon as possible.
