Question about Cars & Trucks
I have a '78 F250 with headers and the heat is burning up the starter faster than I can get new ones in. A smaller Hi Performance Gear Reduction Starter would leave more room for cooling if I can find one that will fit up to the 3 hole design of the original. Has anyone done this?
Fit a heat shield over the starter motor and wrap asbestos lagging on the header

Sounds like you may have accidentally removed the vacuum line to the modulator valve on the back of the transmission. (worst case, the headers may have burned through the hose, but either way, this is more than likely the problem.
Hope this helps
