Hubs will be temperate depending on braking. If there is a failure with a wheel bearing or a brake shoe you will experience grinding noises, which is friction and will cause things to get abnormally hot.

Most likely causes:
Front wheel hubs need replaced (do both at one time)
Front rotors warped or worn (change rotors and pads both wheels together)

The noise from the brakes dragging or the wheel bearings humming gets picked up by the abs sensors in the hubs before you can hear them. A few hundred miles later, the problem will get worse enough to hear while driving. Sounds like the brakes are being applied. I would suggest you have it towed as a fire could result from driving it.

1997 toyota tacoma will not go into 4 wheel drive


Has the transfer case ever been serviced? The fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles, if not the works can stick and cause engagement problems. Make sure the vacuum to the front hubs is available, if the front hubs are not locking the front drive shaft will turn but no Front wheel lock up and no 4 wheel drive is available.

Definitely replace the wheel bearing/hub. I drive a lot of miles and usually am doing this repair on a car with over 100K miles. Since the axles are relatively inexpensive, I have been replacing them at the same time. You will already have done most of the work anyhow to get the hub replaced.

Are the front hubs still locked in?

If you have manually locking front hubs, you probably have a bit of binding in the drive train due to the front wheels being locked to the drive system

After unlocking the hubs, back up about 20 feet, then back forward about 20 feet.....see then if the transfer case can then be disengaged. You MAY need to just yank on the transfer case shifter while the vehicle is moving (slowly of course).....

I had an older ford pickup which did the same thing.....disengaging the hubs and just yanking the shifter had disengaged the 4 wheel drive then I was able to put it back into 2wh high.

I have a 1995 jeep grand cherokee 5.7L when I'm driving about 70 mph for about 20 miles it kind of hums and slightly pulls the steering wheel to the passenger side


could be a wheel hub asembly an if its fourwheel drive have it check one of the auto hubs could have stuck in lock position ut really sounds like wheel bearing/hub assembely

Replace front left wheel berring on 2002 GMC Yukon


do not replace only the bearing. replace hub assembly. remove rim/tire , remove caliper, mounting plate, rotor. . un bolt hub assembly, unplug abs. remove front axle nut if 4x4. you may need to rent the axle nut remove kit and hub puller. pull out hub. drive axle reward out of hub. install new part. do not torque hub over 90lbs. check with parts sell for spec

Did you remember to release the e brake?

Sounds like brakes hanging, foot on brake, or something that causes brakes to be on all the time, at least a little.

Yes this will damage everything that you described..and more. Brakes will work poorly...
