Im guessing it's a 4.3 L engine. Sounds like your coil is acting up when the truck heats up. Bad coil, or small wires going to the coil

SOURCE: 2000 GMC Sierra 5.3 Litre, won't blow hot air

I experienced the same head ache. First attempt was to replace the thrmostat and after taking it apart I realized that there was nothing wrong with it. I then removed the plastic cover/panel located under the dash board on the passenger's side. (only a few 4-5 smalls screws) Removal will enable you to see the on/off switch/gate moving/rotating as you turn the knob to hot or cold positions, on the control panel. If that switch/gate seems to work ok, then the trouble is within the heater core. Many mechanincs suggested that I replace the heater core. A very expensive proposition.
I checked the heater core supply/intake hose and found it hot to the touch, while the return hose was nearly cold. It was definitely a heater core blockage. I removed both ends (supply and return) hose connections/clamps. They are located near the fire wall in the engine compartment. A special tool is very helpful to remove those clamps easily and to replace them as well. It can be done the old fashion way but this tool was a life saver and reduced work time to just minutes. (Tool is $70.00 bucks at auto parts store,so I borrowed mine from a mechanic/friend)
I then hooked up a garden hose to the return end of the heater core and reversed the flow of coolant/water through the heater core. My truck is a Sierra 2000 and I refuse to see how a heater core could get clogged up with clear coolant alone. To my surprise a flat piece of rubber about the size of a quarter blew out of it and the flow of water became unobstructed. I reconected the ends of the hoses to the heater core, replaced the lost antifreeze & everything returned back to normal. No money spent for something most mechanics suggested I replace control valves/switches ($280.00) replace heater core ($500.00) etc etc. I am glad I was curageous enough to tackle this myself and save a few pennies. Good luck, and I hope this will work for you.

GMC's are notorious for fuel pump problems. Not an easy repair. You have to drop the fuel tank to replace. About an $700-800 job at the dealer.

bamerson: have your A/C system pressure tested. Verify you have enough Freon in your A/C system. If your pressure is low, or no pressure is detectable, then you should recharge your A/C system and check for leaks with liquid dye or a Freon sniffer. If this information has been helpful, please vote, thank you.

Motor starts then dies several times when cold

Sounds like the cold start solenoid. It is designed to keep the engine running at a set RPM until it reaches a specific engine temp.

My 95 gmc wont start when hot

check the fuel pressure regulator for leaks it may divert the fuel when warmed up,check all vacuum hoses for cracks if you think it's bad change it. turn key on and wait 30 sec.then crank and see what happens, fuel pump may be getting hot.if you can check fuel pressure at the rail for at least 35 psi.you can do this by removing the schrader valve and attach a hose with gauge.you should be able to hear the fuel pump for a few sec.when you turn the key on. try this when cold then hot see if you notice a differance.it seems to relate to a fuel problem.hope this helps, dave

starting definately has a lot to do with the crank/cam position sensors, but it wouldnt have nothing to do with hot or cold weather, oxygen sensor will make the vehicle run too rich if its out, you will smell fuel very strong out the exhaust, that could make it run sluggish also, and usually if the mass air flow sensor goes out the vehicle wont start at all...

Sounds like a Solenoid might be bad on the starter if it spins freely and a high rate of speed without engaging.

Also, the relay could be bad.

I am ot sure if the fuel filter and pressure regulator would cause this problem.

No code will show with a bad starter or bad relay, I don't believe.

Good luck with this one.

It sounds like your alternator might be starting to go bad and the Battery Light is coming on because it is not charging the battery correctly. Have your Alternator checked with a volt meter, it should be reading 13 to 14 volts if working correctly. If not, replace your alternator.

You may have a fuel pump going bad.It may be alowing the fuel to run back to the tank.Try turning the key on for two min. without cranking it ,then see if it starts any better.Listen to see if you can tell when the pump is running and if it stops.
