there are several ways they can fail the can shoot out a sulfur soot or they can smell like rotten egg smell or than can set codes from the pcm and rattlling noises low power can feel like a plugged fuel filter.when accelarating. one way to test is vac gauge to constant vac source record vac at idle then rev to 2500 rpms if vac gauge stays near 0 to 5 inches it could be plugged or smashed exhaust pipe. hope this helps Thunderboltz

Testimonial: "thank you ihave replaced everything else"
Symptoms are rough running, stalling, poor gas mileage, and especially a strong smell of rotten eggs (sulfuric acid). The main cause is old age, but poor/cheap/contaminated fuel can also be a contributing factor.

if vehicle has less than 200,000 kms then i think cat is ok ,check the O2 sensors with a automotive meter rather than reading the obdii ,which i cannot do anyway in europe but at least you will know if they work or not their are two O2 sensors on each cat one before the and one after ,unless this is a high mileage vehicle i dont think the cats will be gone

SOURCE: bad catalytic converter symptoms
First is a PO420 or PO430 obd2 code
Converters should last 12 to 14 years
Next --if it has completely failed & melted the
honeycomb inside, then it is blocked & you go
about 30 mph at best
A clogged gas filter will do the same & get you
to about 50mph
You should not have a converter issue on a 2008 vehicle
