Sounds like the Idler pully(there is 2). it is probably seized. although its hard 2 see it not moving when the motor is going around. Its cheap & easy 2 replace. but b quick b4 it strips your fan belt 2 bits.!!

SOURCE: loud noise near the alternator

No I have a noise coming from left side while idling I popped hood and tried to trace where its coming from.....there's the cable from the alternator to the battery when I touch it I could now feel the knocks coming from that cable so its probably a problem with the alternator I haven't experienced a dead battery yet so it still works but don't know for how long

Have very loud whinning noise on2000 saturn sc1.9 sohc can intake gasket cause this sound or a tensioner

Tensioner, alternator, power steering pump, water pump. All of these can cause this. Using either a mechanics stethoscope or a long screw drive (place you screwdriver near not on the pulley if each decice. Then place you ear to the handle..the screwdriver will transmit any sounds to your ear. Always be careful of clothing, jewelery hair etc so I'd doesn't get caught in the belts or pulleys) locate what is making the noise and replace.

Whinning noise when engine is off

Whinning Causes
The whining noise you hear coming from the power steering pump is one of three things. The first is more of a loud "hush" than a whine; this is the sound of fluid rushing through the bypass valve when you turn the wheel all the way to one side or the other. Sometimes the bypass valve malfunctions or doesn't open all the way, causing pressure to back up in the pump and cause your engine rpm to drop. The second and third causes result from cavitation -- vacuum pockets created behind the rotor's vane blades as a result of extremely high pump action -- or air in the lines.

2002 Saturn Vue V6 AWD sounds like an F1 car when i drive it. Very loud constant noise. Checked trans fluid and it was fine.

I have a 2002 saturn vue. Same thing..sounded like a jet engine ...loud humming as I accelerated . It got increasingly worse. It turned out to be the front wheel bearings. Replace them, now the noise is half as loud...have to do the rears also! 93,000 miles on it. Also, don't forget to replace the timing belt. It it goes too long and breaks, it will trash the engine...
