SOURCE: starter

hi clarence,

first of all you need to know what is the starter in order to remove it. if you can trace the big wire that comes from the positive wire of your battery to a big round thing at the bottom part of the engine. that round thing is the starter. before you start removing bolts, remove first that big wire from the positive terminal of the battery. it is normally bolted to the engine by three or two bolts. there are two wires that you need to remove first before removing the starter. a big wire from the battery and a small wire that controls the solenoid of the starter. after you remove the wire, remove the bolts that is holding the starter in place and the starter would drop down. the you can repalce it or repair it.

i hope i was able to solve your problem. please rate me.. tnx.

SOURCE: 1991 nissan stanza starter problems

Hi Jim.

When you turn the key, you should at least hear the starter solenoid click. When you turn the key the ignition switch sends 12 volts to the Starter solenoid ( really just a relay). The Solenoid closes and applies 12 volts (at a high current) to the starter motor to crank the engine. If you have a way to measure voltage, you should get 12 volts at the small terminal on the starter solenoid. The solenoid is mounted on the top of the starter motor. If you get 12 volts but no cranking, the solenoid is not working. If you get 12 volts and the starter doesn't crank the starter is defective. At this [point take a small hammer and tap the starter motor, not hard, just medium. Sometimes this will cause the starter motor to catch next time you turn the key. Best bet is to remove the starter motor (with solenoid attached) and take it to an Auto Zone type store where they can check it out for you. Be dure you disconnect the ground terminal of the battery before you attempt to remove the starter motor.

Hope this helps Good luck loringh PS Please leave a rating for me if appropriate Thks

SOURCE: How to remove starter motor from 1988 nissan

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST.

Basically, remove the 2 bolts from the bell housing (pretty easy).
But the starter won't have enough clearance to drop down, so it has to be pulled over the cross member that holds the motor mounts, through to the front.

The electrical harness has a bolt that connects it to the engine block. This bolt has to be removed in order to give you enough slack to pull the starter all the way forward. Also, you have to remove the right tie rod and get it out of the way so you can pull the starter through.
Then, disconnect the two wires from the starter and reverse the process with your new starter.

Have a nice day, and thank you for using Fixya.

1988 Nissan Stanza not getting gas.

have a muffler place check the catalytic converter it may be clogged and needing a new one. or if you haven't changed the timing belt you need to do it right away. since they are made of rubber and need to be changed every 70000 miles. if it's the timing belt, if it breaks you'll need a new motor. you need to look into it before that happens.
