1988 chevy pick up 5.7 some times when I turn the key it wont start I have to turn the fly wheel a inch or so for it to start any I dear what it might be

There are teeth on the fly wheel and you may have broken one or more teeth. You may have to replace the fly wheel. When you turn the fly wheel by hand you make the good teeth so the starter will work.

My stater is free, spinning thn grindingmon the stop but it doesnt do it all the ti,me but is slowly getting worste its a 2001 z3 roadster 3.0im i replaced the crank positioning sensor but did nothing...

replace the starter and the flywheel-the bad starter has not engaged the teeth on the flywheel fully and has ground some teeth off so you'll fit that space every once in a while-cheers Denny

Flywheel or something grings against the starter when clutch is engaged

There is no way the ring gear will hit the starter pinion unless the fly wheel bolts on the crank shaft or loose allowing the flywheel to run out of true. If you have had clutch/ rear seal work done lately the fly wheel will only fit in one position and if that was ignored at some time then the fly wheel will run out and touch the starter pinion.. I would also check the adjustment on the starter pinion as it has to be set by the lever pivot to a correct distance or it will touch the teeth of the ring gear

Wont start

battery terminal connections looseor corroded.Check the cable terminals at the battery.Tighten the cable and remove corrosion as necessary.Battery discharged or faulty. If the cable connections are clean and tight on the battery posts turn the key to the on position and switch on headlights and or windscreen wipers if they fail to function the battery is discharged.Automatic transmission not properly engaged in park or neutral or clutch pedal not completely depressed.Broken loose or disconnected wiring in the starting circuit, inspect all wiring in the starter solenoid and ignition switch.Starter motor pinion jammed in fly wheel ring gear, if manual place ransmission in gear and rock the vehicle to manually turn the engine.Remove the starter and inspect the pinion and fly wheel at earliest convenience.

I would pull out the starter and see what I could find, either the starter or the fly wheel. If you remove the starter you can look at the fly wheel and the starter. Good luck

1984 transmission wines in all gears 5 spd trans am 305 engine. How can i get the wine to go away?

If this vehicle is an automatic ....the whinning your hearing is the bearing on the oil pump in the torque converter. Time for a new transmission.
If its a stick the noise may be the throw out bearing of the clutch. Time for a new clutch.
If it is a stick and your replacing the clutch have the pilot bearing and input shaft (of transmission) bearing replaced, and if the fly wheel doesn't have any meat on it replace it.

Starting problem

Starter grabs the flywheel of the engine and gives it a spin so that the engine starts running when getting fuel and spark.
If you cannot start the car (starter 'dead') the reason is usually the solenoid switch. The more expensive option is that hte starter itself has broken (unlikely).

GMC Sierra...grinds while turning key.

teeth could be broke off the fly wheel...the fly wheel is what the starter engages with to turn the engine over,,,it looks like a big gear with lots of teeth....check the starter first and see if it is fully engaging.....tap with a hammer while turning the key..sometimes this will release it..thank you and have a great day

Car starts but sometimes makes a whirling noise. I was told it was the starter

sounds like the starter is not disengaging the fly wheel quickly like it should when you turn the key the starter cog connects upto a fly wheel that has teeth all around it when the teeth of starter cog connect between teen on wheel it spins it to crank your car then goes back to starter if you hold your key on after starting the noise you hear is the starter cog(teeth ) still engaged in wheel if this is the sound it needs to be serviced not neccassarily replaced
