There is a recall for the transmission that involves your exact problem. Call a dealer and see if your VIN is eligible for the recall. Check the NHTSA website for the exact details.

    Here is more detail:
    Make:
    BUICK

    Model: LESABRE

    Model Year: 1999

    Manufacturer:

    GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

    Mfr's Report Date: APR 23, 1999

    NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number:
    99V089000

    RQ99007
    NHTSA Action Number:

    RQ99007

    Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Potential Number of Units Affected: 99333

    Summary:
    VEHICLE
DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4T65E AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSIONS. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF
FMVSS NO. 102, "TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER SEQUENCE." A RETAINING CLIP,
WHICH SECURES THE MANUAL VALVE TO THE LINKAGE OF THE TRANSMISSION
DETENT LEVER, CAN BECOME LOOSE UNDER A COMBINATION OF POSSIBLE DRIVER
SHIFTING MANEUVERS AND ALLOW THE LINK TO BECOME DISCONNECTED FROM THE
    MANUAL VALVE.

    Consequence:
    IF
THE LINK DISCONNECTS, THE DRIVER'S INDICATED PRNDL STATE MAY DIFFER
FROM THE HYDRAULIC STATE OF THE TRANSMISSION. IF THE DRIVER SELECTS
'DRIVE' AND THE TRANSMISSION IS ACTUALLY IN 'REVERSE', A VEHICLE CRASH
    COULD OCCUR.

    Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE MANUAL VALVE/LINK ASSEMBLY WITH A REPLACEMENT MANUAL VALVE/LINK KIT, FEATURING A SPRING-TYPE FASTENER.

The trans probablely wasn't the problem.
Sounds more like solenoids or shift linkage issues

Code p0671

P0761 - Shift Solenoid C Performance or Stuck Off

This shift Solenoid is damaged. this explains the erratic shifting you are experiencing. replace this solenoid asap if possible. This shift solenoid is responsible for the engagement of the O/D gear as well.

97 buick lasabre trans slips in overdrive

Either the cruise control is going out or the torque converter clutch circuit is going out on the trannys overdrive. Do you have check engine light codes? If so you will need to have a computer hooked up to read them. Darrel coleman also has a problem with his car like this and I have suggested the same thing to him

Transmission problem

Your forward clutches are going out.It usually starts with your 1 to 2 shift then eventually it will only have 1 and reverse..Take a look at the dip stick..If it has blackish or grayish stuff on it bad trans is more than likely.Giving the trans a fluid flush is good but by doing that now after it is already slipping could result in even sooner failure..So the best advice I could give you is start saving for new trans or to rebuild the one you have...A good additive you could put in it to prolong the life is a LUCAS trans oil.Its really thick and sticky and will give your trans a little longer life before failure. This is not a permanent fix nor will it stop it from going out but will make it last a while longer..Try and not do any harsh take offs and try and let out the gas pedal when you think its going to shift from 1 to 2...If you let it slip into 2 it will fail even sooner yet..
