Engine Rotates (acts as it will start) won't fully turn over.

Please help - I just replaced my distributor cap, ignition rotor, spark plugs and wires, and fuel filter over the last 48 hours. Yesterday, it stalled while waiting at a red light and was towed to my house. I had just purchased all the parts for the above described repair during this trip. I have also replaced the knock sensor, timing belt, alternator, mass, egr valve solenoid, several relays, vacuum hoses, battery, air filter, oil filter, 2 o2 sensors, muffler and resonator. The car started briefly following the spark plug, wire replacement, distributor cap and ignition rotor repair, but repeated engine rotation w/o turning over as before. I scanned my car again yesterday and found no codes. I had emissions work done on the vehicle 1 month ago and passed the test. Any ideas?

Did you replace the TPS (throttle position sensor)?? Try that if you haven't so. But if you did that already, and still getting the same problem, I would suspect the fuel pump going bad.

Have you "reset" the computer on the car. When parts are replaced, the comp continues to run the vehicle on all the old settings which can drive you nuts because nothing you do will fix a problem. Usually, taking both battery cables off and waiting for 15 minutes will reset the computer. If this does not do it, then ask a dealer how to reset yours.

Mike, Check for diagnostic codes. Check fuses/relays,wires/plugs for pinched,damage or corrosion. Could be a lot of things like distributor armature, cap, rotor, stator, ICM, coil,spark plugs,wires, make sure ground is good to distributor. How to Replace a Distributor Cap in Toyota?


Its a plastic cap and and on its top the sparks wires get connected.A small plastic rotor spins inside the distributor cap, firing each spark plug as it rotates. If the distributor gets faulty there the engine may not perform well. in most cases it has been noticed that only replacing the cap does not helps but with cap the rotors also need to be replaced. The procedure is as follows:--- 1) First of all disconnect the negative battery terminal. 2) Then remove the spark-plug wires . Note:-- Before removing the spark plug wires please note down how and where the wires are connected,then only remove the connections. 3) Then on the distributor there will be a cap.remove that cap.the cap is connected by two pins.you will have to press the pins from each side to loosen the distributor cap.Then lift the distributor cap from the top. 4)Then remove the rotor From distributor The rotor is fitted with two screws.Remove the screws and loosen the rotor. 5) Then lift the rotor out from its shaft. 6) To install new rotor and cap.reverse the procedure. This will help.Thanks.

the problem is almost certainly the ignition module and the stator inside the ditributor, they are a real problem in this year.

Would crank but would not start in extremely cold weather. Now it won't start at all but fires on and off.


Do a tune-up, Plugs, rotor button and distributor cap. Not sure if your model has a cap or coil pack. When you say fires off and on do you mean it starts off and on or you get ignition spark off and on. If you have a cap, the rotor button can get worn down and not make good contact with the contacts inside the cap. When engine rotates the rotor button rotates inside the cap which produces spark through your plugs wires. If you have a coil pack, it could be going bad. If coil packs get moisture within it and diffuses the spark from going into the plug wires. Moisture and wetness causes a lot of problems with the ignition system, so it's best to apply Di-Electric Grease to the coil pack, wire boots on both ends. The grease stops moisture from getting into the components and sparks from jumping to the moisture.

I have a 2001 chevy express 1500 v6 it wont start i check fuel pump,fuses and replaced distributor cap and rotor. havent check spark plugs or wires. it wont start...


Check for broken timing belt. Put a screew into spark plug head put the other end close but not touching to a metal engine part. have some one check for spark while you turn over engine. if thei is no spark check with distributor cap off if the rotor rotates when engine is being tuned over. if not then check timing chain. Here are a few things you can try to debug the no spark issue. I hope these help you out. 1. Remove the distributor cap and crank the car. If the rotor turns you're ok. If it doesn't turn then that's you're problem and you will probably need to change a timing belt/chain. 2. Check the spark from the ignition coil by pulling the coil wire from the center of the distributor. Use an alligator clip to attach a short wire to the coil wire contact. Bare the other end of this short wire and set it up so it's sitting very close to the engine block. Turn off the lights and try to start the car. You should see a spark jump from this wire to the block. If you don't see a spark it's likely your ignition module or ignition coil is bad. 3. If you have a spark maybe it's not getting to the plugs. You may need to replace the distributor cap and rotor. You can test if the plugs are sparking by pulling one, re-attaching the spark plug wire and seeing if you get a spark when you try to start the engine in the dark. Please note, the metal threads of the spark plug need to be shorted to the engine block to complete the circuit during this test.

Here are a couple of things that could be causing your problem. 1. Bad ignition coil or ignition module 2. Clogged fuel filter 3. Clogged air filter 4. Clogged fuel injectors 5. Bad spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and /or rotor. 6. Broken timing chain/belt. Here are a few things you can try to verify that you have a good spark. 1. Remove the distributor cap and crank the car. If the rotor turned you're ok. If it doesn't turn then that's you're problem and you will probably need to change a timing belt/chain. 2. Check the spark from the ignition coil by pulling the coil wire from the center of the distributor. Use an alligator clip to attach a short wire to the coil wire contact. it sounds like the injectors are not opening up man.. replace the injectores and this should fix your problem..good luck keith....
