SOURCE: Check engine light , trouble code 34

Your truck is OBD2 compliant take it to a local auto parts store and have them read the code for you they usually do this as a free service, if it doesn't have a obd2 port then your truck is not a 1996 vehicle.

SOURCE: RPM issue when accelerating

Is this an automatic transmission or a manual shift?
If manual shift, you have a clutch slipping problem.
If automatic, you still have a slipping problem.

It is not holding in overdrive.

It might be a throttle position sensor is dirty and sending information to the computer to downshift. It could also be a vacuum leak somewhere in the engine induction. If it has not been tuned up recently, start there.

It might not hurt to check with a dealership to see if there are technical Service Bulletins issued for what you are experiencing.

The transmission filter should be changed if it has not been changed in 75000 Km. and the pan checked for excessive debris which might indicate to look forther at the transmission if that does not clear it up.

Sounds like a dirty IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It is located on the throttle body. Remove it and clean it throughly as well as the throttle body underside as well where a lot of carbon build up is.

However, since it is such a high idle, check for any vacuum leaks. Check your hoses and lines running inside the engine bay, specifically near the intake. Spray some carb cleaner around while the engine is running to see if you can hear or see a leak. Check the intake gasket as well.

The RPM of Nissan Altima stays high when drive over 65 MPH.

No....the rpms differ from engine to engine and from manufacturer to manufacturer. RPM's are always higher at higher speeds.

Stick shift # Automatic RPM

That is normal,If you do the same speed in 4th gear the rpm's will almost double.

The rpm's will repond faster in a manual than an automatic.

In a manual the engine supplies the power required directly to the gear that you have selected thus the engine rpm's will increase or decrease as needed.

one unit that operates ratio changes and is connected to the engine is that vacuum operated actuator on the transmission
it is possible that that unit is failing , vacuum hose is leaking and that will cause ratio changes as the vacuum varies
run the fault codes to check for wiring problems or VSS or TCM problems as well
