    Thanks for the help,

It turns out that it is the transmission, and yes the repair is in the 4 figure range. I guess this is one of those buyer beware things. I bought the car 2nd hand.

I've always had a manual, so this is my first automatic, sounds like the best advise is to make sure the transmission fluid is topped up.

    cheers,

Automatic transmissions can break down over time. my focus had its transmission replaced once about 3 years ago and at that time my boss owned it and had it replaced for at least 4 digits 2000-3000$.

Manual transmissions last a bit longer[ not much ] and are lighter an easy to repair, but a shop will charge the same for the parts.

automatic are heavy and a little more complex

if you have a friend who is good with cars im sure you can save a lot more money

but make sure you have transmission fluid. look for a yellow cap [ sometimes its different colors] that should be to the right or left mid section and remove the cap and make sure its the transmission fluid cap and check to see if its low. try refilling but check for leaking so you dont waste it

your trans might be leaking so check to see if a red fluid it dripping from under your car, that may be the problem and the transmission may need to be replaced

If it's a standard, you may need a new clutch. If it's an automatic, you may need new clutch plates. They wear out over time. I had an old Saturn with an automatic tranny, and when I would shift into reverse it wouldn't go into gear unless I revved it a bit, then it would clunk and drop into gear.. Not very healthy for the car, your tranny may need a rebuild.. Hope your piggy bank is full.

A carrier bearing usually pertains to the differential assembly and would not cause the symptom you describe. There is a problem with this transmission that causes it to not drop completely to first gear after a period of driving. Ford is aware of it but I do not believe they have initiated a recall. Call your Ford dealer(s) to see if you can find an honest man. Ask for the service manager.

The trans has to come out & apart to hopefully
find the issues

Noises aren't that common in trans failures

They fail often & by the millions every day from not

I would guess that something inside of the transmission has failed and there is no longer a mechanical connection between the motor and the drive axles regardless of what gear you attempt to move in.[sheared splines, broken planetary, etc.] Often when this happens you won't hear any kind of noise because of the failed parts being inside the transmission case...instead the car just won't go anymore. You could have a CV drive axle joint that has failed but generally they will make some noticable rattling or grinding noise as they churn away when you try to go forward or reverse. If something has failed inside of the transmission then the transmission will need to be removed and repaired. It if is just a drive axle joint that has failed then that can be replaced without doing anything to the transmission. Hope this helps and good luck!
