1996 VW Passat - Random cylinder miss fire, worse

1996 VW Passat - Random cylinder miss fire, it is worse when the car is hot (after 20 mins of driving) and if the AC is on. It will cut off at stops and barely run 55,  when this occurs the windshield wipers also fail. The wires and plugs have been changed (twice) and did not help.
Eng lite on - reads cylinder 2, 3 missfire, random cylinder miss fire, secondary air error.

Pop the heed, see the air box on the very left? On top of that box is the Ignition Control Unit. Little black square w/ winds about 1/2"
thick....

That is the problem. Or Your MAF sensor...
I don't know how to chech the Ignition Control Unit with out the proper tester.

But the MAF is located directly below in side the box.
If you POP off the large hose that comes out of the front of the air box. You can see the MAF, spreay it some contact cleaner for electronics not BREAK CLEANER>>>>>>.

No Engine I know of has a 1,2,3,4, fitting I am sure you have the firing order connected wrong, plus your description point to the firing order as well. Cheers, Malcolm Campbell.

My '99 VW Passat is shaking, like it's going to stall.

That indeed is strange. It could be one of or a combination of things a number of things: a dying fuel pump, bad plugs or plug wires, a dirty fuel filter which needs replaced, carb problems, water in the gas. If you have really high mileage on the car, it could even be a bad clutch getting worse. Other than those admitted "guesses" I have no idea. If this has never happened before, I would give it a new fuel filter, put in a good additive like Sea Foam, make sure it is firing on all cylinders and take it from there. Good luck, bro . . .

Dose the coils on the passat differ from the coils on the golfs. What are the specifications on the coils of the passat 1.8 T 2002 MODEL

the passat uses coil packs one for each cylinder and the 2002 golf uses one coil pack that fires all cylinder and also not the same engine in 2002. now the 2000 vw golf with the 1.8 engine uses the same coils,so if its a 2000 vw golf with a 1.8 engine then yes you can use them they are exactly the same, hope this helps.

Changed plug wires still running badly

What kind of wires did you use? If you used some cheap ones, that is most likely the problem. Get the VW wires if you didn't get them to begin with.

Firefire in cylinder four / random misfires

Its not likley to be an injector fault.the air mass meter is far more common.if you unplug it it defaults to a average value and should improve the way it runs if that is the problem.
