ASR - Acceleration Skid Control system.
When ASR warning light blinking the system is activated itself for car acceleration skid control.

For today's typical high-torque engines, traction control (ASR) can increase both comfort and safety, particularly when driving on slippery roads or surfaces offering differing levels of grip. Traction control permits smooth starting and acceleration through the full speed range without wheel-spin or fishtailing.

tdisline_338.jpg

ASR only operates in conjunction with the electronic accelerator (E-gas) and uses components of the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If one wheel suddenly begins to rotate faster than the others (slip), ASR intervenes in the engine management system and reduces power until the wheel stops spinning.
The ASR system represents a further contribution to active safety as it maintains vehicle traction and directional stability throughout the acceleration phase at any speed. In addition, it reduces tyre wear. Activation of the ASR system is indicated by a flashing indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.
The ESP system means the Electronic Stability Program. If the ESP lights on the dashboard permanently the ESP system is faulty. You must access the ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory for pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by ESP ECU, in other words reset the ESP system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.

There is a warning light that has come on the dash saying epc in capital letters what does that mean

If I can remember it correctly it might mean "Electronic Power Control". This related to your electronic gas (accelerator) pedal may be going bad. This pedal is all electronic, no linkage rods, no cable and sometimes referred to as "Drive by wire". Have a VW specific shop connect a scan tool and have the codes translated to your understanding, I'm positive it has codes because you're having issues.

I have a Jetta TDI 1993 Model and I have a problem, while driving the I get no response from the accelerator pedal, the car seems to idle but there is no accelerating power. If turn the engine off and on...

Go back to that VW dealer and complain. I'm sure you payed plenty, and I know in my shop, if a customer's car is not repaired to their satisfaction, I want to know, and make it right. Sometimes parts can be bad right out of the box, and sometimes problems are misdiagnosed. Go back, but don't agree to pay for anything untill you get a satisfactory explanation. Good luck.

What does it mean when the ecu comes on? on my volkswagen polo

I think you meant something else besides the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) the main brain of the vehicle. It is always on and consumes very low voltage when the key is out of the ignition. Maybe you mean EPC (Electronic Power Contol), this reffers to your electronic accelerator pedal which is having issues. To further investigate, a VAG 1552 scan tool is needed to see what is happening and guide you how to repair if there is a problem.

Take it to mechanic shop
EPC - Electronic Power Control
ASR- Acceleration Slip Regulation.
It doesn't tell you much . Vehicle has to be diagnosed by pro's.
