My 85 chevy cavalier won't start. While driving there was a loud pop then engine shut off. It has power, fuel, and spark. Cranks but won't turn over. did a compression test and one cylinder is low. Is...

Well one cylinder with low compression would be a valve or timing chain problem - and a timing chain problem could cause it not to start.
Spark timing won't have any affect on compression.

Car started with sputtering, then started stalling when stopped, and now we can't even get it to turn on

Check you fuel pressure sounds like you might have a worn out pump. Also listen for the fuel pump when you turn the ignition switch to the on position you should here it for 2 seconds. If you don't here it then more than likely your pump is faulty.

I have a 2003 Chevy cavalier that will not start or even try. It cranks fine, I have verified it has spark, I replaced the plugs and crank shaft position sensor, timing chain is intact, but I didn't...

you may need to check the compression. if the plugs have fuel on them and you know the spark is good then the only thing missing for the car to run is the compression. if all the cylinders have low compression then the car has jumped time most likely.

i have seen this on a car that was traded in. apparently it had been real hot at one time. but with no compression it will not start, and would probably be cheaper to purchase another engine. sorry, and GL

1997 gmc savana 4.3, wont start ,has new fuel pump, new pressure regulator, new spark plugs , i cleand up the maxi ijector, looks ok no leaks,i do have spark and fuel but still wont work any ideas

only 3 things will cause this engine not to start (crank and not start) fuel, ignition, timing.
You haven't mentioned the engine cranks over or not, so I have to assume it cranks over.
Possible timing chain or the crank sensor on the timing chain. Have you checked this? you need to remove number 1 spark plug & when the piston is in the full top position on compression, remove the dist cap & see what spark plug wire the rotor is pointing to inside the dist cap. (I'm sure if you google checking for top dead center you'll find the proper procedure)

My 1997 chevy cavalier wont start.its getting spark and fuel.but wont fire it has a 2.2 ecotec.

Sounds like cam belt has snapped. If it broke while starting, could be cheap fix...new belt. Worst case: cylinder head off for overhaul...bent valves / pistons replaced.

94 jeep cherokee cranks but wont start and over loads on fuel

Reaching your Findings I would go to Checking the The Idea of Timing chain Problem
#1 Top Dead Center on Compression stroke, remove dist cap and see where Rotor is Pointing, it should be pointing at #1 Plug wire if not Timing chain & Gear Replacement time. If all Is Well there PLEASE Confide in Me I would Love to Help Thats My Mission here

Cranks but wont start

Engine Cranks But Will Not Start

For an engine to run, you need three things to happen inside the engine. Compression, fuel and ignition, without any one of these components the engine will not run.
Basic Checks:

A. Test Fuses. Test both under hood power distribution center and the fuse panel under dash. This is done with a test light tool. The test light should illuminate on both sides of the fuse, if not the fuse has failed and needs to be replaced.
B. Testing Fuel Pressure Test for proper fuel pressure with a test gauge on the fuel rail, most throttle body injection cars (TBI) are between 13 psi and 17 psi. and most (DPI) direct port inject systems are between 40 psi and 55 psi. If no or little fuel pressure is observed and there is 12 volt power present the fuel pump, the fuel pump needs replacing.
C. Checking Timing Belt Test for compression by removing a spark plug and insert a compression gauge. Crank the engine over about 5 seconds the gauge should read between 125 psi and 165 psi, if no compression is observed remove front engine cover to inspect timing belt or chain. Crank engine to observe cam rotation, if the cam does not rotate the timing belt or chain has failed. (note: if the timing belt drives the water pump it is best to replace the water pump at this time)
D. Test for Injector Pulse Remove injector connector to insert injector test light (node) or volt meter. Observe light flash or gauge pulse while cranking. If light/voltmeter doesn't respond, an ignition distributor/crank angle sensor (CKS) or an ignition module is most likely your problem.
E. Test for Ignition Spark Remove spark plug wire, insert an extra spark plug into end of wire, rest spark plug next to a ground source then crank engine. You should observe a blue spark between the spark plug gap and ground source. If no spark is observed, an ignition coil, ignition rotor or spark plug wires might have failed. (always keep hands away from engine when cranking)

1996 chevy cavalier wont fire

Need to actually, physically, check spark.Pull a plug wire off the plug, insert a medium size phillips head screwdriver into the spark plug wire boot, making sure it clicks in and engages.Lay the screwdriver's metal shank about a 1/4" from a metallic ground source (not the fuel line).Have someone crank the car over while you are looking for an arc between the screwdriver and ground. No arc...no spark...cheap easy way to check for spark and eliminate or not,the ignition system.
