1996 VW Golf Speed Sensor Issue

I have a 1996 VW Golf that has been in the shop 3 times now for what the computer is reading out as a bad speed sensor... Check engine light comes on when speedometer goes out...

I have had 3 brand new replacements put in, in the last week and still no avail. I am unable to smog my car due to the check engine light being on.

I dont want to spend anymore money jsut for the computer to keep saying its teh speed sensor...

Is there anything else that could be causing this problem and could anyone tell me where else to start looking?

Frustrated.

SOURCE: My check engine light came on in my 2002 New VW

If it's a 2.0L, then the coolant sensor would be an easy fix. It's between the Air box / engine (on top of the coolant flange on the end of the head). If you do that, you probably should do a thermostat. Usually it's recommended to replace the thermostat when you do a coolant temp sensor, but that's up to you.

SOURCE: vw golf 1400, speedometer shows wrong speed,

Have you changed the tires on the car to a different size?

If not then you probably need a new vehicle speed sensor.

your model car has a electronic speedometer transducer, what it does measures rotation speed of the transaxle final drive and converts the information into an electronic signal which send to the speedometor module in the instrument panel, chilton is right my friend.yep ecu could be the problem because ecu uses the signal or input from the electronic speedometer transducer.

2007 vw rabbit abs light blinks on a steep grade

abs sensor blinking is usually cause by a bad wheel speed sensor or vehicle speed sensor. not too sure what going up hill is doing. sometimes that can move brake fluid around if its low and will detect low brake fluid, but you brake like would also come on with the abs sensor. check and fill brake fluid to fix that. to fix a sensor you need to bring the sensor readings up on a vw scan tool to see which one is cutting out. should take to vw shop for scan tool. they might charge you .5-1 hour diag time but its better then the hassel and expense of parts replacing. finally if they find nothing wrong with the speed sensors going up hill, then its probably the abs unit. check those in that order and you'll find it.

Change of wheels and tyres on VW Golf

Well, as someone (in my younger days!) who put tires of sizes not recommended by the car manufacturer, I feel bad discouraging your son from the 'awesome' tires/wheels he wants on his VW. It is generally recommended that tire size (diameter) not vary by more than 3%. If I did my math correctly, there is a difference in the sizes (diameter) you state of 5 %. Go to 'tire rack' website for formula and info to verify my rusty math skills! The speedometer would be off, due to the larger diameter wheels, resulting in a speed indicated that would be too low (less revolutions per mile). So, besides risking a speeding ticket due to lower speed indicated on speedometer, My main concern, would be that our modern day computer controlled engines base their readings on engine and auto speed, and it will be working with false speedometer readings.

If the check engine light is on look at the faults. It could be a defective cam sensor, the timing belt might not be in the place, or a defective mass air flow sensor.
