Did you just get the vehicle? was it sitting in some wet weather? could be the break pads and shoes have "frozen" to the rotors or drums. does it seems like it wants to move but when you press the accelerator it wont?

I just started having problems today. 2001 ford f150 . It felt like tranny was slipping. Checked fluid, a little low, topped it off. truck goes into reverse but wont move backwards. truck moves forward...

Sounds like the rear end differential is going out. I had a similar problem on a customer's truck, and it was the differential in the rearend. Replaced the rearend, and the noise was gone.

1991 Ford F150 Jumps out of 4W drive sometimes in reverse

My 94 did the same thing. In a automatic, you have to come to a full stop, it usually grinds when in 4L ,And for the shifter, I had to look at mine, 2w is all the way forward to the dash, then 4H is toward you 1 click, and "N" is the next toward you, then 4L , you have to push the lever down and pull backwards. Always come to a full stop when changing gears and wait a few seconds before changing direction.
