Question about 1994 Volvo 940

1993 Volv0 940 intermittent starting problem

My daughter's 940 (145K miles) has a starting issue: she can be out running around, stops, shops, etc. and when she comes back from shopping and gets in the car, it won't start. Affter about 20 to 30 additional minutes, it starts right up. Doesn't happen every day but has occurred 2 times in the past month.
Appears to be electrical as if contacts heat up and separate and, after cooling down and closing, fixes itself. Very perplexing.

Check the trans fluid level first with the engine running. If its low , top it up. Then go back and have them take care of the valve issue.

Any thing made by man can be fixed if the repairer has enough experience to face the challenge.. Unless you have jump started the car recently then there should be nothing wrong with the CPU . I would have done a fault code test first and checked for sensor that will cause the fault-- Starting and stopping could be an immobiliser problem---bad ignition switch ( not keeping contact in the run position)---low fuel pressure from bad fuel regulator ---intermittent contact on a cam/crank position sensor. or a dozen other sensors that affect the engine.

Check the ports if there is any carbon,I doubt it,
but you got to look
I would make sure you don't have overheating issues
That is the cause of NOX (High Combustion Temp)
Check fuel pressure
Use synthetic oil in engine
Check PCV Hoses etc

93 Deville, 4.9L, 113k miles. I'm a decent mechanic (have replaced engines, heads, etc.). The latest problem is an intermittent stall. The first time it happened the car was driven for 10 mins then...

Now you can do the Fuel Pump

They seize up mechanically and fail
Electrically

Did you drive with a fuel pressure gauge,
taped to the windshield

Got a good fuel filter

Looking won't help you

Always do some type of testing,
before replacing anything

My daughters hand me down 1995 olds cutlass ciera has 103,000 miles. It was grandmas and well maintained. It has started shutting off while driving. No rhyme or reason....

One possibly/likely problem is that the ignition circuit is cutting out. I had this same issue on a car (malibu) and found it was an intermittent ignition switch connection. Replacing the ignition switch fixed it for good.
One thing that will really help you is to notice you dash lights when this happens. If the dash lights go out when the car stops, then this is it. If the dash lights (ignition) stay on, then you have another issue.

Problem has been intermittent, i have a y2k bone

This sounds like an ignition module issue. The module is around $130 and can be tested for free at Auto Zone. Make sure they test it 8-10 times. It needs to be hot during testing to see if it'll fail.

Transmission not shifting properly

Usually transmissions are not fixable. If you're on the original transmission with 145k miles then it's probably had it's life. You could keep driving it like that but it's gonna die soon. I suggest replacing it or buying a new car, whichever is cheaper. A new transmission will cost a couple thousand depending on the year of the car.

well this is pretty normal for the mileage you have i suggest you switch to a heavier weight oil or what i do is add a quart of lucas oil treatment with each oil change that stuff is amazing i have seen it stop oil leaks and stop smoke from the tail pipe and it will raise your oil pressure 10 to 15 psi.

Engine shuts down on deceleration

Well 145K is alot of miles, catera's are not that reliable especially after 100K. It sounds like you could have multiple issues but take it to a mechanic asap before it becomes unfixable.
