Fuel pump pressure valve? Car won't start right away.

It takes anywhere from 1-2 to 5-15 attempts to start before it does. I haven't had it that long, but I think it is the pressure valve or something to do with fuel getting to the engine because the more fuel in the tank the faster it will start. I was wondering how difficult it is to change a fuel pump yourself. It would be nice to just fix the pressure problem, but I'm assuming it's attached to the pump as one piece. I got an estimate from a shop and they told me it would run around $900. I' can't afford that right now so I'm also wondering if I'm potentially causing more problems by holding off on the repairs.

Try changing the fuel filter before you do anything drastic. The fact that your car starts better when the tankis full leads me to believe the tube in the gas tank has a hole in it or has come apart somewhat. It could be sucking air.
It's not terribly difficult to change the fuel pump. It's mostly dirty and difficult, because you have to remove the gas tank. And those silly little pumps are pricey. The easiest cheapest fix is to go to an auto wrecker and get the whole gas tank, with the pump still in it. Don't be afraid of used parts. You drive to the parts store on them all the time.

Tank needs to come down to change pump...Depending upon how much experience you have, not really that difficult and far less than $900. Tried checking rail pressure with a fuel gauge? (good thing to test before replacing stuff!!)

Won`t start when cold

No such thing on your car.
The temp sensor tells the computer what the engine coolant temp is.
If it were faulty you would get a check engine light.
I would have the fuel pressure checked before and after you crank the engine. The pump relay provides power to the pump when you turn the key on to recover some of the lost fuel pressure after the car sits. The one way valve in the pump is supposed to prevent the pressure from dropping.
If the fuel pressure drops to zero it could take some time to crank the engine enough to get it back up.

I have a 1998 Lincoln Town Car Catier. It seems like it won't start when it is cold, but after I let gas out of the valve on the fuel rail, it starts right up. What could be the problem?

This problem is caused by a defective fuel pressure check valve in the outlet of the in tank electric fuel pump. The part is a ball and spring check valve and it is leaking. This allows pressure to bleed off and this causes an air pocket, the air pocket causes the hard starting. The pump is located inside the the fuel tank and is sold as one part, sending unit for gage and pump, it is called the fuel pump module.

Check for vacuum leak at intake manifold or bad fuel pump relay or have fuel pressure checked to see if fuel pump is working properly 40-45 psi it should be pumping

Had friend put OBD diagnostics to it and error code indicated fuel pump ????? No code indicates replacing any part . Indicates testing ! pressure and flow testing , voltage drop testing the electrical circuit etc... There is a check valve in the fuel pump assembly that is suppose to keep pressure in the fuel lines an fuel rail . When the check valve goes bad allows fuel to drain back into the tank. Try turn the key on an off a few times to build up pressure . The PCM energizes the fuel pump relay for two seconds at key on .

The car was started and then shut off immediately..tried to re-start a few minutes after and it cranks but won't start....this has happened before on 2 occasions...i understand it is a common problem...

check the fuel pump pressure with a gauge to see if has the right pressure and you may want to check the fuel pump relay to see if it is good .the pump may not be keeping the right pressure after it gets hot . if the pump is working i would try the relays .but use a repair manual for the right pressure readings .

94 lt1 cranks a while before car starts. When car starts the car runs fine.

You may be losing fuel pressure. There is a fuel pressure regulator in the fuel line. It has a check valve in it. If the check valve is bleeding off then you have to get fuel pressure pumped back up. You can verify by turning the key on and letting it sit for about 5 seconds, turn off and then back on and repeat 3 times. This will pump fuel back up to the regulator and should start right away.
