Question about 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass

P0410 code I also have my check engine light on and is giving out this code. I know I need to get something replaced. But with any issue I have with my car, which there is a lot. I want to know if it is safe for me to drive until I can get it fixed. Is it going to stall on me?

    Thanks for your responses. I finally brought it to a mechanic last night. Initially after looking at what the computer said through a mechanics eyes he said my only problem was that my gas cap wasn't shutting correctly. Apparently, there is alot of sandy gunk in the area that isn't allowing for a good seal. I wasn't convinced that was my only problem, so I left it there last night for a more thorough check. Here's to crossing my fingers and hoping that I'm just being perinoid.

    Most "4" codes are for the emissions system. likely safe to drive but cannot say for sure if eventually you will have any performance problems. don't wait too long though or you eventually can cause problems with other components.

What does this code mean? P0410


Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0410 indicates that your secondary air injection system is not functioning properly.
Not all 2001 Chevrolet Bazers are equipped with secondary air injection. The secondary air injection system was added to vehicles that were to be sold in certain areas where the emissions laws required it, like the State Of California.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the system by commanding the secondary air blower motor to run and the air injection solenoid to open. This causes additional oxygen to enter the exhaust system. The PCM then monitors the signal from the oxygen sensors to see if the commanded air has in fact, entered the exhaust system. Code P0410 sets when the PCM has commanded the blower motor on and the solenoid open and there is little or no change in the oxygen sensor signal.

GM has had some problems with these systems and there has been a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) issued that addresses some of the known concers. Below is a brief description of the TSB and the issues involved.

Condition
Some customers may comment on the SES/MIL light being illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find a DTC P0410 indicating that there is a concern in the secondary air injection system.
Cause
Water may have collected in the AIR pump or the vent solenoid and frozen or corroded the pump.
Correction
Replace the AIR pump and install a new inlet hose and solenoid tube assembly...

The bulletin goes on and gives detailed information on how to perform the repair and the part numbers of the replacement parts needed to do so. Your local dealer can provide the parts for you and you can probably get them to print out a complete copy of the bulletin for you. It is not really hard to do if you want to do this yourself.

P0128 is coolant operating temperature operating too low. This can be contributed to the Thermostat stuck open or faulty electronic radiator fan clutch. This is common, I had the same issue and replaced the thermostat and fan clutch and had the clutch re-programmed (required) at the dealer. As for the P0410, check the air pump fuse, if blown it will set this code on. Also check the air pump hoses for water and cracks. Hopefully this helps!!

Check engine light on, diagnostic code 0128 and 0410 keep coming up


P0128 - Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)

P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
(has to do with exhaust system)

Note: There is a technical service bulletin (TSB) regarding code P0410 for a number of GM models. The TSB calls for the replacement of the AIR pump and the installation of a new secondary injection hose.

Check engine light comes on


Do you hear the air pump run when you start the car? No? Check the A.I.R. pump fuse in the under hood fusebox. if it is blown then you probably need a new air pump motor. If the fuse is not blown then the relay could be the culprit. if you can hear the pump running when you start it the engine then you probably just have some wiring issues from the relay to the ecm it can still work ok but fail the resistance test that the computer runs randomly. Give some more info and I'll help you through this.
