I have a 2004 BMW 545i. The Transmission Light

I have a 2004 BMW 545i. The Transmission Light came on 2 days ago but it has not been on since. I thought Transmission Fluid might be low. If it is I woulds like to knoow what type I should use. Once I experienced that problem, the next day my car would not start. I had the battery recharged so that seems to have resolved the problem. However is it time for a new battery. I have not driven my car for more than 3 months.

I had the transmission fluid checked. It was ok- Apparently a malfunction in the electrical system. The battery has been recharged and I drove it yesterday. It seems to be ok. I plan to replace the battery soon, since it has not been replaced since I purchased the car in 2004. I drive it so infrquently I think the battery simply died. It has been driven approximately 25 miles since December 2008. I plan to drive it on the highway this summer.
