Transmision slipping and using fluid

Just bought a used car and the transmission was suppose to be in good shape. When taking off the transmission doesn't immediately shift and it's using fluid. What could be the problem? How expensive can this be?

If you have a vacuum modulator on the side of the transmission make sure it is good...any trans fluid in the vacuum hose or inside the modulator shows failure. Unit should not "use" fluid unless there is an external leak. Failure there will affect shifting.

Transmission was doing good.it started hesitating OS slipping to go in third and overdrive.I parked it right then the next morning it would not shift out of first gear.what could it be

What type of vehicle? Dodge truck? Test for transmission codes, could be shift solenoids or governor pressure sensor. Is the fluid level low? What the the transmission fluid just serviced? If so, is the right fluid in the transmission, was it overfilled? Overfilling transmissions causes seal failures. Have transmission pressure tested, they can test operations of clutch packs for all the gears to notify you of seal failure. Not all transmision shops do that test anymore., good luck

Slipping transmision

First check the Automatic Transmission fluid for proper level and add as necessary. If the transmission slips in all gears, then the torque converter might be bad or worn out. If it slips in only 1 or 2 gears, the clutches may be worn out inside the transmission. A transmission rebuild is indicated in the latter situation. Make sure that the proper Transmission fluid is used as indicated in the manual or on the dipstick (if printed on it).

1995 dodge stratus transmission slips sometimes

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you remove the positive battery connector and let it sit for at least 5mins. before reconnecting it. This will reset the system and can get your vehicle back to it's normal operation.

You may want to replace the transmission fluid as well for it can be burnt.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Code p0734 I just replaced eng. and trans. now have this code.

Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Incorrect transmission shifting Possible causes - Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Shift solenoids
- Transmission mechanical problems
- Transmission hydraulic control circuit Tech notes Start by inspecting the transmission fluid level and condition, and change fluid if necessary. When is the code detected? P0734 is detected when A/T cannot be shifted to the 4th gear position even if electrical circuit is good. P0734 NISSAN Description This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by Transmission Control Module (TCM) as follows:

Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B

A: Output shaft revolution signal from revolution sensor
B: Engine speed signal from Engine Control Module (ECM)
C: Gear ratio determined as gear position which TCM supposes

If the actual gear position is higher than the position (4th) supposed by TCM, the slip ratio will be more than normal. In case the ratio exceeds the specified value, TCM judges this diagnosis malfunction.

My transmision fluid is black and two transmision mechanics say if you change transmision fluid the car wont run no more is this true sombody please help me they are saying im going to need a new...

The mechanics lied to you. Changing the transmission fluid and screen will not cause any car not to run. Just as you need to periodically change the oil, the same holds true for transmission fluid. Though the fluid is black, yoou state that you have no slippage or nothing out of the ordinary. If that is the case, then you do not need a new transmission. Just have the fluid and screen replaced and all will be fine. Make sure to pick up a transmission pan gasket while you get the necessary fluid and screen. Again, changing the fluid will not cause any car to not run. It is safe to perform the fluid change.

I have a 2000 Volvo s40. Yesterday my automatic transmission light began blinking. I stopped by my local volvo dealership this morning and they told me the light only blinks when you need a new...

I would change out the transmission fluid and put some transmission additives in there, see how the transmission shifts after that. Worse case have the transmission rebuilt.

The struts are about $150 apiece plus labor. If the car runs fine besides those two problems I would fix it and keep it, it's alot cheaper than a car payment.

1998 Dodge caravan AWD transmision slips at full throttle

Have you serviced the transmission latley? fluid, filter, band adjustment

Usually under heavy throttle causing the slip is caused by a seal in the pump leaking off hydraulic pressure letting the clutches slip.

Does it slip in all gears or just 1st.?
Does it slip in reverse?
The reason I ask this is because 1st and reverse use different fluid pathways,

also you can take it to a tranny shop and have them check the fluid pressure at the accumlator port to determine what the exact problem is,but my advice is to just drive it easy and make it last as long as you can,a new or rebuild tranny from a dealer would run 2500 or more.

there is a website www.car-part.com that you can use to find a replacement transmission

This is a 99 saturn with prox 80000 miles the transmision seams to be slipping in the lower gears 1st 2nd anyone have an idead how to solve the problem the obvious solutions are change the transmission...

If you can take it to a transmission shop that can re4build the transmission,. They should have a tech2 scanner, have them raise the transmission line pressure and may be replace the servo's after you replace the transmission fluid and filter. That should give you a better bite when the gears shift and give you a bite more life in the transmission if the clutch pack is not too worn out. Good luck and hope this helps.
