There are electric shift solenoids onside the valve body. The modulator valve plays a part in when the shift occurs too. Have them checked out for proper operation.
Could need new filter, cheap but p.i.t.a. and if it doesn't work you just put new filter in dying transmission. Could also be over or underfilled or as my dad found out, bugs like transmission fluid as a place to go die in and got stuck in a passageway. Sometimes you get away with using high mileage fluid, sometimes not.
Try removing and cleaning the idle control solenoid on the throttle body. They get contaminated with carbon build-up and gives you an erratic idle. It's the round solenoid that screws into the side of the throttle body. When you remove it you'll see a spring loaded plunger that needs cleaning with throttle body cleaner and you'll need to clean the seat inside the throttle body as well.
Check for a transmission speed sensor fault (OBDII scan). Loss of speed sensor signal will result in no torque converter lock up, and no overdrive. Also transmission filter should have been changed at 80,000 miles. Age of your vehicle(1994) warrants the filter service. Transfer case (4WD) needs to be serviced as well.
