1999 Mercury Mountaineer 'check engine' light came on after a very cold night. checked oil and antifreeze. oil was 2 qts low and antifreeze was to the top. light won't go off

Fill oil up until the check engine light goes off. If it doesn't go off by itself, have the codes scanned by an OBD-II Scanner for 1996 and up vehicles. Then, if there aren't any significant codes, erase the codes using the OBD-II Scanner.

My check engine light is on. How do I turn it off?

On the 1997 Lincoln Town Car, it has an OBD-II computer on it where an OBD-II scanner can clear the engine light by erasing the codes, after repairs are performed on the circuit that originally tripped the check engine light.

One can buy an OBD-II engine scanner for under $100 from Sears or Walmart, or a local auto parts store, or even Ebay.com or Amazon.com.

2000 beetle- while driving yellow emissions symbol came on. what does that mean?

This is OBD - On - Board -Diagnostic Display.
On Board Diagnostics, OBD-II, is required on all automobiles and light trucks from 1996 onward. OBD-II is a set of specifications for monitoring and reporting on engine performance in modern automobiles.
If the Service Engine light is on, then connecting a Code Scanner on OBD Connector, the Code is picked up and the code explanation can be found. If this is a False Code, this can be Cleared with the code scanner, after reading the code. The location of OBD-II connector in your car can be found here:
http://www.obdclearinghouse.com/index.php?body=oemdb
Remember the Check Engine light only comes on for emissions-related failure (which includes fuel and ignition, too). A separate warning light will illuminate if there are non-emission problems such as low oil pressure, charging system problems, etc.
If the light is on because of a misfire or fuel delivery problem, and if the problem does not occur after three drive cycles, the Check Engine light may go out. Whether the light goes out or remains on, a code will be snt and remain in the computer memory to help you diagnose the fault.
More information for the codes can be found here:
http://www.aa1car.com/library/ic10224.htm
After the code is picked up with a scanner, the code explanation is founded, and a decision has to be made to fix the problem or to clear the code. This can be done with the same scanner. If you do not have a scanner, any AutoZone, or Advance car parts store can do it for free.

How to turn off check engine light in 98 740il

All cars marketed in the U.S. in the year 1996 and later have to have a standard OBD-II connector inside the car under the dash on the driver's side.

With an OBD-II Scanner one can scan the codes that are indicating trouble in the engine.

After repairs are made, the light can be turned off by pressing the 'erase code' button on the scanner.

If one is experiencing an intermitent code, the code may be turned off with the 'erase code' button on the scanner to temporarily turn the check engine light off, until circumstances make the light turn back on.

Stalls, tried to start engine doesn't start anymore. now sittin on my garage

What codes are coming up on the OBD-II Scanner if any? If the engine doesn't work codes may be stored in the computer.

Also, when you say it doesn't start, do you mean that it doesn't 'turn over' when you twist the key all the way forward to the start mode for the starter?

Or,do you mean that it 'turns over' but doesn't actually get the engine to run on its own power.

If it is the former, then you may have a dead battery by now, or the starter is going bad.

If it is the latter, then I would check for engine codes for things like a crank sensor not sensing movement, or a MAP sensor (if equipped) not sensing pressure in the intake manifold.

If you don't have a scanner, you can get one at Walmart for under $100 to scan OBD-II codes. That's what i did for my 1997 Cadillac which also uses OBD-II (since 1996).

Good luck on this repair.

I have a 96 mazda b4000 and the check engine light is on how can you clear the code without using a scanner?

In obd-II vehicles, you can clear the code by having 40 or more cycles of start and run conditions followed by turning off the ignition completely without having an engine anomoly or issue.

It's easier to use the clear codes button on the obd-II scanner.

Nowadays, you can buy an OBD-II scanner for less than $100 at Walmart. I just got one.

Good luck on this.

All gears work except reverse won't work. Check

Take the car to AutoZone, they will check your ECM for the code using a OBD II scanner that is causing the problem for free, once you have that code the problem can be diagnosed easier.
