Sizeing a battery all depends on requirements of the manufacture, how ever if you have auxiliary electrical systems such as driving lights ,pumped up stereo systems or dvd monitors for the kids these may add more load on electrical system so go to a higher amp battery would be a good idea.
if space permit a 600-750 cranking amp unit should do well

Get the highest cca rating battery you can afford. It will give longer service and is more reliable under extreme hot/cold conditions. Your choice also depends upon how long you intend to keep the car!

I have a 95 Grand Am. We had a long and cold winter here in michigan. So my battery died. I purchased a new battery recently and car started right up. After sitting in my driveway for a few weeks, battery...

You need to run a parasitic drain test with a multimeter. Disconnect the vehicle battery positive terminal and connect the multimeter in series between the battery positive terminal and lead. the multimeter should be set to display amps. With all systems turned off, the keys out of the ignition and all doors closed, alarm off and any hood/bonnet switch depressed then after 20 minutes the amp reading should be around 0.03 or less. If you have more than 0.05 then you may have a parasitic drain, causing a n accelerated loss in battery power. In this case, using the same setup then pull fuses one by one from the fusebox until your amps drop down to the normal range. The fuse you pull which causes the range to drop to normal represents the system which is at fault.
The most common causes of parasitic drain from my experience tend to nearly always be failed back up batteries in alarm siren modules or badly wired or faulty stereos. Those are the two systems I'd pay particular attention to.
Of course it may be a simple human fault like you left your trunk/boot light or interior light on.

09 cadilac cts-v battery going dead over couple days in garage

perform a battery leak-down test. use a clamp on amp meter and put the clamp around the negative battery cable. the reading should be very low in the milli amp range. if the reading is much higher, there is a circuit draining the battery. with the clamp attached, remove and replace all of the fuses one at a time. when the reading drops you found the faulty circuit. then you have to fix it. OR...there may be a light staying on such as a glove box light or a trunk light or an under the hood light. remove all the bulbs where the light doesn't come on until you open it to see if the battery goes dead.

Not charging

First tell me why you don't think it's charging.
Because of the voltage reading you are getting at the battery terminals? The range you want is between 13.6v to 14.2v. The higher the voltage the lower the amps. and true the other way, the lower the voltage the higher the amps. If you get a reading of 13.6v or lower, the alt is nearing or at max output. An alt can only run at maximum for around fifteen minutes and it will start slinging solder from overheating. It's a good indication the battery is either totally dead or junk. Charging above 14.2 the alternater is running wide open and is only putting out high volts which will cause the battery to boil , in turn destroying it. This is a bad alternater. All alternaters have integrated voltage regulater with the exception of ver few of the earlier ones. You cannot test an alternater by removing a battery cable to see if the engine keeps running without taking great risk of damaging the alt, regulator. So tell me why you feel it isn't charging. Remember an alt is not made to charge dead batteries. Their sole function is to maintain the battery charge. Without a battery, the alt won't last 10 seconds.
Hope to hear from you and good luck.

My silverado 3500 01 battery keeps going

Ck the charge rate at the battery posts. The proper range is 23.6 to 14.2v , The higher the voltage the llower the amps. Ie; at 13v Alternator is about 10% under capacity. @ 12v it is charging at max capacity. @ 15 v isthe alt is not charging but frying your battery. 9amps is ok if battery is fairly charged but at start up it should sit on 13-13.6 volts. for about 15 seconds the start climbing to less charge towards 14.2.

How many cold cranking amps should I have for my 2001 SL1 Saturn

A 550 CCA Battery would be ok. Your recommended Battery is 525 CCA. The extra 25 Amps would be ok and also give you that little extra bit on those colder days up there. Thanks for Using FixYa!

Sincerely,

JC
