Question about 1988 Ford F 150

1 Answer

My 1988 F 150 has a dying problem. Sometimes when I stop at a traffic light the truck will die. I have replaced the fuel pumps, the tps, normal tune up parts. I have had the injectors cleaned, the trans flushed. To top off everything the local Ford garage can not find anything wrong with the truck. I get a check engine light on a regular basis that comes and goes. I think that it in the emissions system. I just don't know where to start and don't want to waste money I don,t have. Thanks Don

The truck will immediately restart and run fine. Occasionally it will smoke a little bit after starting. Don

First thing you need to do is when it stalls out, determine what it's not getting (fuel or spark) then once that's been isolated you can do some testing to determine why. If emissions system isn't working properly it can influence running...check and find that problem as well.

The emissions system includes the egr valve which can put unwanted exhaust into the fuel mixture at the wrong time which will cause stalling. In giving repair advise, you have to understand that I can't see or hear or do any testing on your vehicle. Any repair shop that would do a repair without any testing would soon find themselves out of business. I suggest that you have a code scan done (most larger parts stores do this free) Use those results added to what you already know to locate the problem. I suggested that you check after it stalls because that is when locating the problem is generally best...(a sensor that is working when tested running does not always show up as good when it is in a "no start condition") Unfortunately, yours starts back up right away (you didn't say that 'till your second post ) Till you can narrow down the actual problem, everything is suspect. But, again...fix what you know is wrong first!

Our 2001 Nissan Xterra engine died at traffic light. Power seemed normal but engine will not run. 5 weeks ago we had it in for a tune up and oil change. Any thoughts on why it died and will not run when...

i assume that "power seemed normal" means that you can get engine to turn over, but not start.

possible problems: clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, water or other impurities in gasoline, foreign matter in gas tank, faulty "electronic distributor", possible blockage of adequate air supply, broken timing chain.

if i were to have to guess, it would be the timing chain, especially if car was running well prior to this problem.

fuel filter, fuel pump, catylatic converter, air filter, TPS sensor, any of them. You need a computer to hook to it to check codes.

Welcome to Fixya

You might need to have a good tune-up with your car. Did you notice the needle of the RPM going up and down? The normal idle RPM is 600 to 800.

Thank you for using Fixya!
