You don't, unless it's ridiculously high, like over 1750 rmp. Most cars will idle higher in drive then they do in park. The next time you get caught at a light put it in park and let it sit, it may go higher at first but most lower below what it was idling.

My Hyundai Matrix car is not starting. When I turn the key to start the car it tumbles but won't turn on. I know that it is not the battery because we took the same battery and installed it into

got same symptoms with my hyundai matrix. Engine just stalled when car is not in motion (i.e traffic light, traffic jam), plus a cylinder misfire. I went online for some search (this site included). Then went for OBDII diagnostic.

Its the Crank Position Sensor/Crank Sensor/ CKP Sensor or whatever it is called. Had that replaced, and she's been back to well behaved since.

Subaru forrester 2000 idles speed low

First, is the check engine light on ? If it is, you have to get it scanned to know where to start looking.
This car uses an idle air control valve to adjust idle speed.
The valve could be dirty or failing, and the throttle body could also be dirty.

it sounds like your idle air control valve or your trottle postion sensor is giveing you trouble you might have the codes ran and see what it pulls up.

The baseline idle is set too high.  Meaning someone has screwed the idle screw out too far.  Probably because the Idle Speed Control Motor is dead.  Same thing happened to me on the same model car. Replacing the ISC Motor is extremely easy to do, a replacement cost me $135AU.

Idling to high

Hi jmach,

There is nothing wrong with your vehicle and no need to have anything repaired.... The high idle speed is controlled by the on board ECU...(the Electronic Control Unit).... When starting the vehicle from cold, the automatic enrichment of fuel increases the idle speed... Depending on the ambient air temperature.... the colder the weather, the longer the engine will take longer to return to normal idle speed. Thats how it's designed to operate.
