Question about 2002 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

My 2001 Hyundai Sonata just had the rack and pinion replaced because of leaking oil. The repairmen told me I need new struts, too. I only have 35,000 miles. Do struts need replacing because of age?

Leaking power steering luid

You need to find out where its leaking from, gravity is usually a good place to start trace the fluid to the topmost wet part. There is usually the leak. I just changed the high pressure line between pump and rack on my 2001 sonata, wasnt terribly difficult but not much room to work on the rack side. The line ran me $65.

My power steering fluid is leaking

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Where does it leak? On the rack and pinion or on the power steering tank? If it's from the tank then it's just gonna be a hose problem will surely need replacement. If it's underneath the rack and pinion then the oil seals are surely worn out. This will need to be pulled out to gain access to the rack and pinion oil seals. Once they are replaced it will surely stop the leak.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

I went to drive my car to work this morning and lost the power steering feels like it locked up the leak of power steering fluidf is leaking from the rack and pinion not pump

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

If that's the case then the oil seals of the rack and pinion should be replaced. If the seals are worn out it tends to leak and can definitely feel a loss of power. If it still leaks even after the replacement then the rack and pinion should be replaced.

There are instances that after oil seal replacement it still leaks it's because that the rack and pinion has severe damage.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Powersteering leakage of the rack and pinion unit.

The problem with only replacing the seals is that the inside of the rack maybe worn which caused the seals to leak in the first place. First I would try some Lucas or similar product power steering stop leak. This may or may not stop the leak for awhile. Second...I would replace the rack with a rebuilt unit. I personally would not try to replace the seals. Good luck with it.

Loosing all my powersteering fluid, liquid not coming from the pump. liquid leaking from the shoe underneath right side. how do I change the seals? how can I get there to change them? Do I need a special...

Most likely , your fluid is leaking from the rack and pinion steering unit. It is not fixible on the car, and not easily rebuilt by a home mechanic. It is common to change the entire unit.

You do need a few special tools to replace a rack and pinion unit, but most auto parts stores will loan them to you, if you buy a part there.

If you don't have a good shop manual for your car, a good choice is to go to and for about $20, you can get a 1 year subscription to your car, and it is very helpful to me, when I use it.

I have a minor broken seal on my rack and pinion

There is but it's not going to help, the rack and pinion steering has large amount of pressure on it when you turn the steering wheel. If the seal is bad, sooner not later. The seal will fail and you lose all the power steering fluid and the power steering which can in turn also damage the rack and pinion. The safest and cheapest thing to do is get it repaired before it get's worst and you end up replacing the rack and pinion too. Good luck and keep me posted. be glad to help

2000 Hyundai Sonata front end wobbles.

put the front tires on the back and see if it changes.
alot of times,if the suspension is defective it wears the tires uneven ,out of round.
check and make sure the wheel nuts are tight and torqued properly.
alot of techs use just the gun,and not a torque stick and overtighten the wheel nuts.
