I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota w/ 3.9 5 speed 4X4 When I try to start it the starter engages for an instant then goes dead, if i hold the key to start it just keeps doing this, turns for an instant then nothing then it will turn again for an instant repeatedly If I try to short across the starter it turns over and starts fine I have had the starter checked and it is good. the relays have been replaced. and the clutch interlock is in good order Any advice?

You may want to check the wiring that is in you car between the starter and the key since you said you tried directly connecting the starter to the battery. Check for loose connections. Also most ignition systems have a capacitor in them, check it out if needs replacing

1998 dodge dakota truck wouldnt start-would try, almost like it was not getting fuel, but would not engage to start. Now it just makes a clicking sound when I try to start it.

When mine had the same problem it was a wiring connection under the hood on the driver side about 1/3 the way over - when I press it together it works fine. If you want a picture I can try to post it for you -

I have an 98 dodge dakota 2.5L im trying to install the starter. there is a red wire that goes to the battery, a smaller wire that goes to the ignition where does the 3 wire go?

If the third wire has a large ring terminal it most likely goes with the large battery wire to feed a junction block or maybe a fuse panel. Note there is a wire from the solenoid to the starter motor. There is nothing you have to do with this wire. It provides positive battery voltage to the starter motor when the key is turned to start.

1998 dodge dakota 4x4 5spd 3.9l-cfank but wont

Do you have spark?
Do you have fuel?
Which are you missing?
TIP.A quick check for spark.........give it a spray of starting fluid....if it runs....you've got spark.
No spark usually means......a bad coil or ignition module on the 3.9.
No fuel is usually caused by a bad fuel pump.

Engine won't turn over, no click, no nothing

ck your clutch pedal switch if it is open circuit it won't let the starter engage you can unplug it and jump the the two wires if this doesn't engage the starter you have a bad starter relay and it is located in the fuse box under the hood
