You need to find out what diagnostic trouble code has been set in the computer related to the light being on. you can go to a car parts store and they will usually retrieve the code for free, idea being that you will then buy some parts to resolve the problem. you can but you are certainly not bound to. the federal govt has established guidelines about when the check engine light must be lit, the standard is that if a condition exists that would cause the vehicle to exceed 1.5 percent of emissions for that model of vehicle as built, then the light must be lit. the rules do not prevent the light coming on for other reasons, but it must be lit for that reason. because of that rule alot of the time when the light is on it has something to do with emissions. that can mean that something is going on with O2 sensor, egr valve, couple other things. O2 sensors do fail, the nature of how they operate and where they operate (in the hot exhaust stream) causes them to eventually fail. anyway thing to do is find out what code is set and proceed from there. hope that helps

sometimes that works, lot of times the light just comes on again. if it is going to come back on it may take awhile. wait and see what happens.

Fluid levels usually don't trigger the check engine light, but engine sensors do. Most chain auto part stores have a code scanner you can use in their parking lot. The scanner plugs into a port under the dash on the drivers side.....scan the code an post it back here or Google the code for advice.

My caddy will not start cold unless I shoot starting fluid into the intake, then it runs okay until I shut it off after it warms up. Then no matter what I try it will not start until the engine cools. Help...

This is typical of the engine timing being off. Have that checked with a timing light. I wonder if your distributor clamp is loose.

Another possibility is low fuel pressure, and that can be checked with a gauge by any mechanic.

I have a 1997 Ford F-150 whose parking brake emergency light sometimes turns on, but not often. It seems the problem is a sticky switch. What do you think and where is the switch? Thanks.

Hi!!

Check your brake fluid level and the condition of your brake pads/shoes.

The ABS and/or Brake Light some times come on when the fluid level is low.

If you still want to check the switch, it is located on the upper part of the brake pedal

1997 f-150 overdrive

You need to have it scanned. The pcm has a transmission code stored in the memory. The pcm uses the overdrive off light as a check engine light for the transmission.

Where can i check the clutch fluid on my 5sped 1997 ford explorer

On the drivers side firewall near the brake fluid reservior you will find the clutch fluid reservior, a small black plastic cap will be on top of it.

I would go going along just fine, when all of a sudden the power to the wheels is absent. The engine revs but no power to wheels

Have you checked the transmission fluid level, it should also be pink in color. Check with engine running and trans in "Park". If the fluid level is okay you need the transmission looked at by a reputable shop (consult your local BBB about trans shops or visit your Ford dealer).

ABS light

ABS STANDS FOR ANTI LOCK BRAKES. FIRST CHECK THAT YOU HAVE THE PROPER AMOUNT OF BRAKE FLUID. IF THE FLUID LEVELS ARE OKAY, THEN YOU PROBABLY HAVE A FAULTY ABS SENSOR.
