REMOVE V-BANK COVER
DISCONNECT ACCELERATOR CABLE
REMOVE BATTERY CLAMP COVER, AIR CLEANER INLET AND INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR
DISCONNECT THROTTLE BODY
REMOVE INTAKE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY
REMOVE REAR WATER BYPASS JOINT
REMOVE WATER BYPASS PIPE
Remove the bolt.
Pull out the water bypass pipe from the water pump.
Disconnect the wire clamp from the bracket on the water bypass pipe.
Remove the O-ring from the water bypass pipe.
8 REMOVE STARTER
Remove the 2 bolts holding the starter to the cylinder block.
Disconnect the starter from the cylinder block.
Disconnect the starter connector.
Remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire.
Remove the bolt and disconnect the wire clamp from the starter and remove the starter.
Install the wire clamp to the wire bracket with the bolt. Torque: 9.81 N.m (98 kgf.cm, 84 in.lbf)
Connect the starter wire with the nut. Torque: 9.81 N.m (98 kgf.cm, 84 in.lbf)
Connect the starter connector.
Install the starter with the 2 bolts. Torque: 39 N.m (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf)
INSTALL WATER BYPASS PIPE
Install a new O-ring to the water bypass pipe.
Apply soapy water to the O-ring.
Push in the water bypass pipe end into the pipe hole of the water pump.
Install the wire clamp to the bracket on the water bypass pipe.
Install the water bypass pipe with the bolt. Torque: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)
INSTALL REAR WATER BYPASS JOINT
INSTALL INTAKE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY
CONNECT THROTTLE BODY
INSTALL INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR, AIR CLEANER INLET AND BATTERY CLAMP COVER
CONNECT ACCELERATOR CABLE
INSTALL V-BANK COVER

On Lexus ls 400 the starter is located underneath the manifold of intake. The intake manifold has to be removed to replace the starter.The intake manifold located on the top, left side of the engine from the front, along with the hoses, wires and tubes connected to the manifold.Mark each connections before disconnecting.This will help you while reconnecting.The starter is fitted by bolts.Remove the bolts and detach electrical cables on starter.Remove starter from engine compartment.Then re-fit the new starter in reverse as you removed the old starter.Its not very easy job.You will require proper tools to do this.This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.
the starter is located in the valley under the intake manifold. you must remove the intake to access the starter. its a pretty involved job. when reassembling take your time and make sure that every wire is plugged in and every vacum line is connected.
On your 91 Lexus Ls400.
The starter motor is located :
Rear of the Engine. Under the Intake Manifold.
You can see unless you remove the intake.
Becuase for replace the Starter Motor on your car
You will need to REMOVE the INTAKE MANIFOLD.
To get axces to the Starter Motor.
The Aproximate time for Remove and Install the starter is:
5.1 Hours, labor.

The starter pinion gear engages into the fly wheel so therefore, its should be mounted where the motor bolts to the transmission. On most V-8's, like you have, it will be on the underside of the motor. Most likely, on the passenger side. Hope this helps. Good luck.
