Question about 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD

Whining from engine when in gear

Engine is quiet when in park, but whines/ squeals when in neutral, reverse, drive. I had my wife move the gear selector while I looked at the motor, and I noticed that the main pulley (crankshaft pulley) moves forward a bit when the gear selector is moved from park- could be normal, but looks weird to me. The whining begins immediately, and settles down to quiet again when moved back into park. If I drive the truck, the noise seems to go away at higher speeds as long as I keep my foot on the gas. As soon as I let off, the noise comes back. I just replaced the idler pulley, thinking it was the problem. I was wrong. Truck still runs strong and everything else seems quiet. Belt is new. I also noticed that the tensioner pulley has some ''play'' in it. I thought that could be the problem, but it spins freely, so that made me think it was normal. By ''play'' I mean there is a slight movement if I try to wiggle it.

Just a thought- remove the oil filler cap when the whine is present - (this checks if PCV valve is faulty, causing high crankcase vacuum, which in turn causes a whistling/whine noise as air leaks past engine oil seals). Worth a check.

Try listening with a short piece of hose pipe to locate immediate area/source of noise.

SOURCE: car is squealing and whining in front of engine. Can you help?

It sounds to me as if your serpentine belt and/or belt tensioner is bad,
I had a similar problem on my s10 and replaced belt, idler & tensioner.
All three pieces ran about $80.00. I did the work myself. Hope this helps.

Whining noise on Volvo 240 when in neural and park

A common cause of a whining or buzzing type noise when not in gear (neutral and park) is a WORN PUMP in the transmission. How many miles are on the car??

A noisy pump is just noisy and won't cause a breakdown until it becomes MUCH louder. If the noise is not that loud at this point, just keep driving it for now, and chalk it up to normal wear & tear. But DOOO make sure your transmission fluid is topped off. The amount of fluid between the LOW and FULL marks is about one pint. DON'T overfill OR allow it to get below the LOW mark. Transmissions are VERY fluid-level-sensitive.

How to stop the whining noise in Chrysler 300 2004 engine while on

Sounds like you have a transmission pump issue, you will need to take it to a tranny shop to diagnose if that is the problem if in drive it does not whine.

My wife came to a stop while driving the van. When she went to take off she pushed the gas and there was a loud boom followed by a severe whining noise. The reverse gear worked so she got the van out of...

The wheels turning opposite is normal. It's how the differential works. You need to get the transmission checked out by a qualified tranny person.

Possibly an electric shift solenoid, or at least a bad connection at it. If you have some experience, you can try removing the harness's from solenoid packs etc, at transmission and spray them good with a penetrating spray to clean them up, but be sure to blow them out after, or at least spray with contact cleaner prior to re-assembling. If your not experienced, it may be wise to get it towed to dealer for a scan, or a reputable transmission repair place, hopefully to fix it before too much damage is done. Quite often dirty connectors are the cause, but no gaurantee's. What's mileage & when was fluid & filter last changed?
