Question about 1999 Dodge Ram
My van will stall out when I first back out of my driveway and try to then go forward. It starts right back up again, but then doesn't want to shift for a couple miles and I can usually keep it from stalling in traffic and at stop lights if I put it in park. The a.c. works o.k. while I'm driving along, but when I have to stop at a light, when I put it back in drive and try to go, it starts screeching, so I either keep it off or shut it the a.c. off at a stop and put it in park. I'm just so afraid of being taken advantage of at a shop and have no idea who to go to. I can try to fix it myself or at least sound like I have some knowledge, I will be in a better position.
Thank you for your help!
Based on your post you have 2 basic problems:

Well it sounds like you might have multiple problems. A good thing to do first is to get the trouble codes read at an AutoZone where they will do it for free. The shifting and A/C screech are separate problems most likely. The A/C screech happens when the drive belt is moving faster than the A/C pulley. This could mean a loose belt that needs to be tightened if it doesn't have an automatic tensioner on it or possibly the pressure build up is becoming too high when the van is sitting still because the fluid is not cooling as much when you are moving and so the belt is having a harder time turning the pulley at the same speed. This could be causing a larger drag on the engine causing it to stall when you are stopped or idling. The engine not shifting could be because of bad solenoids or other electrical problems that should show up with the code check.
A few questions to follow up on after you get the codes checked and posted would be whether the shifting problem occurs between all gears or only at certain ones and if so, which ones? Also, any check engine light or any abnormal temperature or any other lights showing up?
