1999 dodge 1500 conversion van stalls at lights/stop signs

My van will stall out when I first back out of my driveway and try to then go forward. It starts right back up again, but then doesn't want to shift for a couple miles and I can usually keep it from stalling in traffic and at stop lights if I put it in park. The a.c. works o.k. while I'm driving along, but when I have to stop at a light, when I put it back in drive and try to go, it starts screeching, so I either keep it off or shut it the a.c. off at a stop and put it in park. I'm just so afraid of being taken advantage of at a shop and have no idea who to go to. I can try to fix it myself or at least sound like I have some knowledge, I will be in a better position.
Thank you for your help!

I went to autozone and they checked for trouble codes. None showed up. Then I went to shell rapidlube and had the fuel system cleaned and an additive put in. It ran great for the rest of the day. It shifted, didn't bog down, had power! I was psyched. Today, it is bogging down again--doesn't want to go from 2nd to third--seemed to be getting better after a while. Now what?

I go through alot of gas. Everyone I have spoken with has said the gas we are getting now is CAUSING problems. GREAT!! I wonder why it seems like the van runs better when I almost fill the tank. Will the additive actually burn out sludge? I am going to try to check the fuel filter. As for the a/c, I think the tensioner needs to be adjusted---all I have to do is figure out how. It would be nice to use the a/c in 94 degree days!

Based on your post you have 2 basic problems:

  1. Screeching is usually an indication that a belt is worn and is slipping. Assuming the AC works, a new belt should remedy this problem
  2. Adding additives to the gas tank is a good idea to remove water/contaminants from your tank. This would explain why it runs better with a full tank as the debris and water stay on the bottom of the tank, leaving the newer gas to be pumped through the fuel line. A by product of using cleaning additives (not drygas which only removes water) is that they tend to gum up and foul the spark plugs (this is where the debris and residue cleaner burns off). If changing the plugs (fuel filter would be a good idea too) doesn't resolve the poor performance aka stalling, then the overriding stalling problem is most likely the TPS (throttle position sensor)
I do hope you find this solution solves your problem. Best of luck.

How are you making out changing the serpentine belt and the fuel filter? If you're running into more problems, please post back with any questions.

Well it sounds like you might have multiple problems. A good thing to do first is to get the trouble codes read at an AutoZone where they will do it for free. The shifting and A/C screech are separate problems most likely. The A/C screech happens when the drive belt is moving faster than the A/C pulley. This could mean a loose belt that needs to be tightened if it doesn't have an automatic tensioner on it or possibly the pressure build up is becoming too high when the van is sitting still because the fluid is not cooling as much when you are moving and so the belt is having a harder time turning the pulley at the same speed. This could be causing a larger drag on the engine causing it to stall when you are stopped or idling. The engine not shifting could be because of bad solenoids or other electrical problems that should show up with the code check.

A few questions to follow up on after you get the codes checked and posted would be whether the shifting problem occurs between all gears or only at certain ones and if so, which ones? Also, any check engine light or any abnormal temperature or any other lights showing up?

Sounds like the lines may be clogging up if it was running good with what you had done, maybe try some more of the additive to help burn out any build up in the engine (I would try some fresh gas if you haven't put any in for a while). Did you get the fuel filter replaced too if needed? What else did the shop say that you went to? Does the A/C only screech at low idling speeds? I expect the belt just wasn't spinning fast enough to turn it over though I would get it tightened if needed or replaced.

My van won't start after driving a short distance, it will start again after 3 to 5 minutes but then will act like it's going to stall while I'm driving. What's wrong?

Hi Greg, I'm AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair in St Charles Mo

Greg, I read your complete message, but nowhere did I see that you replaced the Cam Sensor. The EGR will cause it to stall at stops but usually will not prevent it from restarting. I would try replacing the Cam Sensor before anything else. If you should need further assistance go to my website by clicking here: Auto Repair

It is likely the fuel injection pressure regulator. First replace your fuel filter, then check the pressure regulator.

Van dies while at a stop sign or light won't start back until moved manually

take a little time to check the air/fuel filters and spark plugs if you have not done so in a long time. all of those things will cause the van to stall at light or stop sign. replace all items that need replaceing. a little service work will keep your van running for a long time.

Remove IAC (idle speed control) motor, clean with throttlebody spray cleaner & the port (hole)it came out of. Re-install & try it. If it cures it for a while & does it again, replace the IAC motor.
