Ever spilled a soda or coffee around shift lever
it may be in the shift interlock solenoid
therefore when the goo heats up it finally releases

My 96 Buick Century (automatic transmission) has trouble shifting in reverse (I have to shift back and forth for about fifteen minutes until it will go in reverse). It also has trouble shifting into drive...

Transmission filter may be plugged. If it is, that indicates wear parts are worn out. Transmission needs to be rebuilt. The transmission control module can cause the problem as well as shift solenoids inside the transmission. No simple fix. You'll have to go inside.

Hi,
The 1st>>2nd shift on the Subaru 4EAT automatic transmission can be more abrupt, but 3500 is too high.
Is there any delay when shifting from Park to Drive?
Does the Power light flash on startup? If it does, you can pull the codes by following these instructions.

This trans has 'bands' that can be adjusted. I'm not 100% sure they affect the 1st>2nd gear shift, but maybe they need adjusted.

Take a look @ ultimatesubaru.org/forum and http://bbs.legacycentral.org. 2 sites dedicated to Subarus.

Good luck,

Must foot be on brake when shifting gears in automatic trans

The damage potential is with accidental shifts out of PARK, such as with kids playing around or the accidental shift by an otherwise occupied driver. To prevent accidental shifting out of PARK, car makers years ago started installing the safety interlock which requires a foot on the brake pedal before shifting out of PARK and putting the car in motion. No damage potential in shifting between other gears, as long as the vehicle is stopped. I hope that this answers your question and wins the debate for you.

'98 subaru wont shift from 1st unless rpms are high- morning only

When you first start driving it usually takes atleast 4 miles to warm the transmission to operating temperature. The temp of the motor may say it is warmed up, But, the trans fluid and differential fluid only begins to warm as you drive and the parts are actually working. THe computer has sensors that keep the trans from shifting to OD until the temp is up as not to add stress to the motor until warmed properly. Hope this helps and have a good day.

Corolla kicks/jolts when shifting gears.

I am trying to understand your problem. Check engine mounts. Have a driver in the car, hood open. Start car, foot on brakes, shift from park to reverse and back again. Shift through all gears, look for unusual engine movements around engine mounts area. Left foot on brakes, press gas in drive and reverse;watch for excessive engine movements. Be careful as you perform these steps. You may also want to check drive axles. Keep me updated.

96 subaru will not shift out of park

you probably have a fuse or circuit burned. If not the relay that commands the unlock mode when you press the brakes is gone. This is obviously a security device. You shoud get it fixed. If you still want to move your car, you can override this security by removing the plastic cap that is around the transmission shifter inside the car. It looks like a cover. It's press fit. By applying a small pressure sideways you should be able to remove it. You'll see then the base of the shifter. On the right side there should be a mechanical box with a hole. Insert a stick like a robertson screwdriver there, press down while shifting out of park. You'll be able to drive to the garage.
