Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

98 jetta will not start on hot days

We have a 98 jetta that wont start on a hot day. Early in the morning it will start and then after the sun starts to go down when its cooler it will start. We had it brought to the VW dealer to get a diagnostic and they didnt find any thing. yet on a hot sunny day the ignition switch is turned on. the music plays but the engine will not start.

got any ideas??

the dealer suggested to replace the ignition switch (and or) the starter, but couldnt guarantee that either would fix the problem. its really weird. didnt happen all Fall, winter and Spring, only during hot summer weather. The car can be sitting there and not have been driven at all, but if its outside in the sun, it will not start until the evening cools down. Im an electrican and think it might be some kind of bimetal part that the heat is causing an open some wheres in the circuitry. either in the ignition or a relay??????

it may be the lower electric ignition switch. the radio working suggests that. when you do have this issue, check to see of the heater motor and the wipers work. wiggle the ignion key slightly and check. also it you have a heavy key ring, the lower ignition switch does not like it. any more infor would be great. did the VW dealer explain their findings of just blow you off?

I keep reading this same problem and have found about three possibilites besides starting with the starter, ignition coil, spark plugs, etc. It could be the following ECU sensor, Mass Air Flow sensor or the ignition switch. I will be replacing all 3 this weekend and will post my results.

Coolant temp sensor acts as engine choke for fuel injected cars, so if it fails you will have this issue. Some early fuel injected cars also had a "cold start injector".

I have a 2004 VW Jetta. A few days ago my car after sitting in the hot sun all day idled very roughly then died at stop signs. The next morning it was fine, but the same thing happened in the afternoon. ...

run fault codes and look for a fuel supply sensor/servo failure. The heat is affecting the fuel system and is causing a fuel vapour lock or is over pressuring the injectors.

Just a thought , maybe change your fuel cap. may not be regulating tank pressure properly.

!997 Jetta doesnt start when it is early inthe morning w/ dew on the Ground or rainy day.

I had the same problem with miosture and my 96 Jetta GLS dying, and I finally figured out it was the ignition coil. Spray the coil with water lightly while it is running, and it'll probably kill the car. They you'll know!
