So I have a 2003 Ford Focus, automatic. 4 cylinder. And for 2 years my transmission acts like it is in neutral when i shift from 1 to 2 gear. then it will **** into gear hard. I noticed about 6 months ago that i was always in overdrive, and that if I shut it off as soon as I start my car, that it wont do it. Any ideas what that could be, or if I need to make any repairs, also recently when I go up steep hills after i have been driving for long distances, it acts like it isnt getting fuel, and starts puttering like it is going to die on the freeway, and my engine light starts flashing, and then it finally goes to normal, ANY IDEAS? thanks!!!

Transmission can suddenly 'grab' when it/you changes gear. An automatic transmission can be sluggish to change gear if the fluid is dirty and needs changing. A worn/slipping clutch on a manual transmission causes the engine to rev high before the car picks up speed.
From your description it sounds as though there's a misfire or rough running with the engine which causes the jerking, not the transmission unit.
There's many things that can cause the symptoms you describe - the MAF sensor .. fuel starvation .. O2 sensor ..
Get a good mobile mechanic to look at your car - or take it to a workshop. I don't think it's your transmission at fault.

Automatic or manual?
If automatic, the problem can be caused by several things and electronic diagnosis may be required. Often , the gear selector switch/connection is faulty. Of it could be caused by the solenoid valve pack in the transmission.
If a manual, gear selector linkage mis-adjusted, OR defective gear set kicking it out of gear.
You can check the fluid level of a transmission only while the motor is running while in park or neutral (wheels blocked). Remove the rear dip stick (transmission) and wipe it with a rag, reinsert it completely. Repeat the procedure and note the level, which should be between or in the hash marks (towards the end of dip stick) and add accordingly.
If the level is okay you will have to check with transmission shops and the Ford dealer for quotes ( and check on Google ). The problem you have is either a transmission or computer problem.
