Question about 1992 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

The steering quit instantly and I could not turn the steering wheel at all. The vehicle could move forward and backward but could not be turned right or left. I am told the "engine credle rusted away and the motor mounts broke". What does an engine cradle look like and does it have another name? I have been associated with the automotive industry for a long time and have never heard of an engine cradle.

My ignition switch on my 2003 civic .is not working. i can put the key in but it wont turn forward or backwards. what should i do?

Have you tried to turn the steering wheel side-to-side, while turning the key?
The steering wheel may be very hard to turn, but moving it just a little may free-up the key
Sometimes parking against a curb, or turning off the car while the steering is turned all the way to one side, will cause the stering wheel lock to actually lock the key cylinder from turning.

My key wont turn in the ingnition of my 1998 toyota avalon

Hi, the problem you could be having is with the steering lock, if this has locked in a funny position it can be hard to get it to unlock.

what you need to do is when you put the key in try turning the steering wheel left and right as far as it will go whilst turning the key to on position, now its going to be hard to move so you will need to use some force turning the wheel try turning it left whilst turning the key forwards and backwards and the same turning right, once the steering wheel has moved this should allow the key to turn and you will be able to start you car.

let me know if it fails to work then i can assist you further ok

plz rate this solution as i have got a whole page of posts that have gone unrated, thanks

How do I align the steering after I replace the steering gear box so I have equal rotations on the steering wheel from left to right on a 1992 chevy astro van?

with the front of the vehicle raised in the air (with jack stands underneath), turn your steering wheel lock to lock, counting how many times the steering wheel does one complete rotation..........halve this number and rotate the steering wheel the opposite way...this will be the approximate middle of the steering rack movement

One important ppoint to note that not all items are built exactly, so you will require a wheel alignment after any change in steering or suspension components to be sure that everything is running true and correct

On the advice of a friend, I turned my steering wheel full lock bout 15 times while stationary in drive. to try and get some potential air out of the rack. The car is fairly new, only about 8 months old. I...

OK, the Power steering is designed mainly to assist you, not to provide the maximum pressure available for prolonged periods of time. There are actually instructions in almost every automotive manual stating to never turn to the extreme right or left & hold it there as excessive pressure can damage the system seals & such.

If you've been fortunate, your "test" didn't do any substantial damage. The tires do put a significant amount of strain on the system sitting still, this also puts extra wear on those other parts that move as well but yes, in parking & other circumstances a vehicle does undergo similar pressure circumstances. I would suggest that you never hold over to the left or right & limit any steering where the wheels aren't at least moving a small amount. Even in parallel parking, when you are turning the wheel you are generally moving backwards or forwards at least a small amount and that relieves a significant amount of pressure on the system.

good luck

Locked steering wheel

Try having someone rock the car frontwards and backwards, while you rock the steering wheel back and forth and try to turn the key - it sounds like you're jammed up hard against the steering column lock.
