the plugs are in the engine cylinder head, if you can't see them then u most likely had better let a professional do the job.

No special tools required. Spark plugs or glow plugs mount down into the engine from the top. Last resort - follow the wires. Be careful when changong the plugs such that you don't break any of the wires. The wires are somewhat expensive, and break easily.

Do you have to remove the intake manifold to change the spark plugs on a 2000 vw beetle with a 2.0L engine

It is not necessary to remove the intake manifold to change the spark plugs on a 2.0L engine. You need a long extention with a flexible spark plug socket at the end. To remove the spark plug boots it is good to have the boot puller designed for this instance. They can be had from a good tool store or one of the mobile tool trucks like Snap-On. The hardest plug to get is the #2. I unclip the fuel injector electrical connector and move it out of the way. Then I pull the boot and move it under the intake so I can get the socket on easily. Reinstall the plugs without the rachet. Just turn the extention by hand so as not to damage any threads. Also put a little never-sieze or something similar on the threads before installation. Then use the rachet to tighten the plugs. Reverse assembly.

How to change spark plugs for 2000 vw beetle

With the intake where it is this can be verry hard. You may have to pull the intake manifole to get it done. I can pull 1,3,4 but 2 is a problem. Check with a good auto parts store many times they have people with mechanical skills and loaner tools.

Where are 2001 spark plugs located?

You have to use plug socket on a swivel and some extensions to geet them loose. I hit ACE Hardware and found a pair of REALLY long needle nose in that cheapo tool table they always have. Used the bent pair to remove/place the plug that is under the manifold.

Spark Plugs Location

They're accessible through the top of the engine - open the hood and the spark plug wires should be very easily visible on top of the valve cover. Pluck them out and the plugs are below.
