Question about 2000 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

Exhaust pipe glows red.

Replaced Head gaskets to solve overheating problem. Now exhaust pipe glows red.
2000 Taurus 3L V6
Checked and repaired vacuum leaks.
I imagine it could be injector or Exhaust Gas Recirculation problem.

Any suggestions?

tcude1, seems unlikely, it wasn't a problem before the engine was disassembled and the headgaskets replaced.

warlock61, 12v it is glowing between the exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converter.

1st I'm trying to get advice for my son, this is his first engine repair.
I live 180 miles away and can't see for my self that everything is hooked up right. He swears that it is.

We believe that a coolant system problem (low water) caused the head gasket to leak. The engine finally stopped running.
He disassembled it had a shop check the heads, and reassembled.

It seems to run well after tracking down some vacuum leaks. it idles a little high @ 850 or so with little surging during warm up.
but the exhaust glows within 5 minutes.

I'm thinking it has to do with fuel mixture. it has the flex fuel system which I don't understand and fuel injection.

I had it happen before on a 74 Toyota corolla, where the manifold was red hot but it only did it once, after it was shut down and cooled it never happened again.

I know that in order for this to happen he must have too much Oxygen and too much unburnt fuel.

What we don't know, is whats causing this condition.
    a blockage seems unlikely.

My son also says he must use a jumper box to start it, so the battery must have crapped out trying to start it before the repair??? so the ECM must keep getting rebooted/ running on low voltage... seems to have forgotten how to regulate the fuel.

This is going to be a pain, due to the age and rust. I assume when you say upper exhaust gasket. You are referring to the manifold to head gasket. If so you need to soak the stud/nuts with PB Blaster lube then back out the nuts, to remove the manifold. For the lower gaskets I assume you are referring to the donut gaskets where the pipes meet, I am pretty sure this model does not use donut gaskets.

Head gasket or lower intake gasket on 98 Blazer

this does sound like a head problem (hopefully just the gasket). pulling the head with the exhaust manifold attached is possible but tricky and difficult. risking the bolt and drilling it out if it snaps would be alot easier. I would strongly suggest having the head checked while its off (so you dont rebuild to find that you wasted time and money on a bad head)

Coolant and oil leak

have a compression test done as the bubbles suggest a blown head gasket or cracks. That will account for the overheating. The oil leak may be from the head gasket or cracks.

I replaced the heater hoses and now there is water coming out of the exhaust pipe

A minor amount of moisture collects in exhaust pipe on a normal basis. Larger amounts indicate a possible blown head gasket. Check oil dipstick for possible water/antifreeze in oil. Had vehicle overheated or hose blown to require replacement? [excessive temperature might lead to head gasket's demise.]

Antifreeze leaking into cylinders on 2000 ford taurus

more than likely,,,a blown head gasket,,this gasket seals the water ports in addition to cylinders,,expensieve repair,,less,,if you do it yourself,,has your car overheated,,,that can blow a gasket quickly,,,sometimes it will also leak on the outside of the engine,,look for leaks,,either way,,probably needs new head gasket,,good luck.

What causes white smoke exhaust system 1998 toyota camry v6

The likely cause is coolant leaking into the cylinders due to a failed head gasket. You should be losing some coolant and need to top it up so check the level. You will also find that coolant is finding its way into the lubrication system and "contaminating" the oil.
Remove the dip stick to check the oil and if you can see a whitish substance in the oil you have coolant in the lubrication system which is is leaking through the failed head gasket.
You may also see traces of oil in the vehicles cooling system so look there also.
The only fix for this problem, once properly diagnosed, is to have the head removed from the engine and a new head gasket fitted. The head would also need to be checked carefully in case of cracking and in any event would most likely need to be machined by a head specialist before being refitted.

The `cause of the failure is unknown but if the vehicle has ever been operated with an overheated engine (due to problems with the cooling system) this is enough to blow the head gasket and to potentially damage the head on the engine.

Not good news I'm afraid so please get it checked out and properly diagnosed with a reputable auto repair business.

Have a 2003 Taurus, 3.0 engine that has a misfire on #2 cylinder. Replaced all spark plugs, wires, coil, replaced the fuel injectors, crank sensor, cam sensor, still have a misfire on #2 cylinder. It has...

Sound like an air / vacuum leak to me.
Re-check for an air leak on #2 cylinder inlet manifold.
Use a propane torch (unlit, of course) to flood propane gas around inlet manifold/head flange & gasket area.
If there is any change in idle speed during this test you have a vacuum leak.
