Question about 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser
I still have one of these I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT LANDCRUISER ,SINCE 1980 SEVERAL 47S AND 75 S AS WELL as 2 ---60 series and I have never had to even think about rack and pinion etc BECAUSE DONT HAVE THEM ,so you can forget about those sort of answers as the people are guessing, rack and pinion steering didnt come into landcruisers until the 100 series. So that makes it simple for you ,the steering pump is useually the problem , in australia where I live they were ,the last tme I priced one, about $ 270 exchange. any one can unbolt ,and bolt a new one on.J ust be sure tocompletely drain and renew the fluid .

It depends on the problem. If it's just the belt, that's real cheap. If it's the pump, that's not cheap (about in the lower three figures) , but ok. A steering rack (rack and pinion assembly) plus labor plus alignment is going to be a few bucks. If it's a rack you need, get some estimates in writing. You might try some independent shops, do you have a tech already that you trust?
