I didn'treally need to get the glue loose to get the mirror off ORIGINALLY. Anyhow I solved my previous problem of removing the foot from the mirror. Then when I glued it back to the windshield I got it back to front. Dah! So I had to remove the foot from the mirror. The hair blower worked very well and the foot came off exactly as you said it would. The second time around I did everything correctly. The mirror is back on and all the electronics works as before. Thank You very much.

From the OUTside of the car, using a heat gun, heat the glass to soften the glue, then take something like a paint scraper, and work around the edges, until it gives up. Don't superheat the glass, just warm the general area back and forth over the metal unit. Then scrape it off.

I had been seeking a solution to this problem for awhile and a fair amount of lurking various forums suggests that the pros heat the windshield with a heat gun ( or propane torch <--- yikes! ), then, when the button is hot enough that it would be uncomfortable to hold your finger on it for more than a few seconds, twist off with a crescent wrench. (there are parallel facets top and bottom of the button to get a good purchase on it.) I did this today myself and it worked like a hot damn. Intuition suggests that if you blast a windshield with a lot of heat in one place, it would likely crack, so I warmed the center third of the whole thing first.

I honestly believe that you may be able to just slide the mirror up, the little flat metal peice should stay attached to the windshield

Take it to either a body shop or a windshield repair place and they will probably do it for you while you wait & inexpensively, using the proper adhesive.

This happened to me once on one of my cars. I took it to a business that replaces windshields and they glued it back on for free. I expected to pay something to have this done but did not have to.

There is a small set screw that holds the mirror to the small metal button. Most vehicles use a small Phillips screw but some use a Hex Key Wrench (Allen Wrench) type screw. Slide the mirror off the button. Make sure not to remove the glue before you put the button back on. Trace around the glue with a grease pencil on the outside of the windshield before you remove it. So you know exactly where to replace the button. You can buy a Rear View Mirror Adhesive Kit for around five dollars.

How do I remove the button from a 1996 Toyota Avalon rear view mirror so I can reglue it to the windshield

getting the button as hot as possible then twisting it around in a circle is about the only method that works on metal buttons. be gentle, it's very easy to break your windshield.

Reglue the rear view mirror. How do I remove the metal disc to glue on the window? Every other one I've done their was a set screw. When you remove the screw the small metal seat slides out. This one is...

They changed it. You have to slide the mounting bracket out the bottom of the mirror case. It's a tight fit but the mirror assembly will slide off, toward the roof. Once you have it off you will see a small slot on the bottom of the mounting bracket. Slide a small screwdriver in the slot and push toward the mounting plate (windshield). The plate that goes on the windshield should pop off. Hope this helps.

Replacing the rear view mirror on a Ford Explorer is easy. The only obstacle you might encounter is fear of breaking the glued metal plate off the windshield. Do not sweat it. You can buy glues at the auto parts store to reattach the mirror to the windshield (Difficulty: Moderately Easy).

Instructions:
  1. Tap gently at the base of the mirror where it slides on over the metal plate glued to the windshield and pull upward. Some rear view mirrors have a small Allen screw that tightens the base of the rear view mirror to the metal plate. Disconnect the electrical plugs if your rear view mirror has them.
  2. Pull the rear view mirror clear of the metal plate. Clean around the metal plate glued to the windshield. If the metal plate has come off because of harsh weather or from hammering too hard at it, reattach it with glue designed for this job.
  3. Clean the area where you will be attaching the metal plate on the windshield. Apply the glue evenly on the surface of the metal plate that will go against the window. Be sure to clean and scrape off all the old glue before applying the new glue. Gently push the metal plate against the windshield in the spot you wanted it and hold tight for five minutes.
  4. Wait a day before putting the base of the mirror or replacement rear view mirror onto the metal plate. Do not force the base over the plate. Forcing it will likely dislodge it again. Press firmly until it will not slide along the grooves of the metal plate. Reconnect your electrical plugs and tighten the Allen screw if your new mirror has one. Adjust the mirror according to your safe viewing preference

Hope help with this (remember rated this help). Good luck.
