Question about 1999 BMW Z3
I cannot get the top to retract automatically or electronically. I did get the top down by very slowly pushing on it. This caused a clicking sound in what I expect the the hydrolic cylinder behind the drivers seat. I the brought it back up by pulling on it very slowly. I have only done this once & hope I have not added to the problem. What do you think the problem is and is there a manual override? I do see a black cable on the driver side.
I bought my Z3 used from a Cadilac dealer, and nobody could figure out how to put the top up or down. It turned out that you have to apply the brake while you move the top up or down.

There is a manual override. I am using it in mine as we speak. Drivers' side of the trunk, remove the carpet going up the "wall" immeadiately behind the tailight. You will see facing you is a T looking device on the hydraulic pump. That is the pressure release valve. Turn it to the left about 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn to give release enough pressure to where you can manually use your top with ease (or as easy as it will get.)
If you wre able to gently apply pressure to get the top down, it tells me that somehow your pump had already lost some pressure. When tops in these cars fail with good pressure, you shouldnt be able to budge them without touching that pressure valve.
Also, check your fluid in the pump. There should be a circle "O" with a dot in the middle of it, stamped onto the side of your hydrulic pump. The fluid should be right in the middle of that "O." Lets hope you just need some fluid!
